Question Hip resurfacing at +6 weeks

I had a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing operation done 6 weeks ago and am keen to learn if I am on course for the promised pain-free land that I read so much about. I am writing this post because I have some doubts that I am !

The following is roughly my progress to date (op on Day 0)

Day 1: Bed bound, comfortable, morphine drip

Day 2: Morphine drip withdrawn and experienced significant pain (back pain ?!) until put onto regular strong pain killer. Operated leg rather swollen down to foot. Using bed hoist and crutches could get out of bed and do short walks. Too painful to move off back when lying in bed.

Day 3-6: Gradual improvement in mobility. Pain well controlled. Leave hospital.

Week 2 to Week 5: Swelling in leg reduced with help of elastic stockings and moving around. Steady improvement in pain from thigh which felt like it was hurting due to a badly torn muscle in the lower thigh. Steady improvement in mobility as muscles sorted themselves out helped by exercises; advised by surgeon to stay on 2 crutches until week 7. Bad aches would regularly start when trying to get to sleep at night but these could be suppressed with pain killers.

Week 6: The muscles seem to be in reasonable shape (largely pain free)although I can't do any straight leg raise yet. However I get a jabbing pain in the hip joint whenever I try and load it with anything more than 140 pounds (I weigh 180 pounds so clearly some way off walking unaided). I am in no pain when standing still presumably with 90 pounds on leg. The pain feels bone related rather than muscle-related and gets worse the more I walk. I detect a subtle 'clicking' in the joint sometimes. Temptation is to spend all day in bed to avoid pain !

To all of you who have been through a hip resurfacing recovery - is this broadly consistent with your experience at 6 weeks (recognising that we are all different) ? Comments welcomed.

Re: Hip resurfacing at +6 weeks

Charles

I had a bilateral BHR some 30 months ago. My recovery parallelled yours, but without some of the aches and pains, but I gathered from my surgeon that he regarded me as "best of class", so don't assume that you should feel the same. From my (extensive) readings of reports of recoveries I would suggest that you are average, and should have little to worry about.

You must recognise that the operation significantly disrupts the hip capsule and the muscles around that, as well as needing time for bone ingrowth into the implants. Your recovery is now in your own hands, as it is vital to keep on doing the proper exercises and stretches. It all takes time and perserverence. It took me 8 months before I was near being able to tie a shoelace.

If you can, find a heated pool and get a program of exercises from an exercise therapist. I started in the pool at about 6 weeks and found that it really helped. It was not until 9 months that I went back into the normal gym, and then did both the gym and pool until 24 months, when I dropped the pool and now just do the normal gym work.

Best wishes

Ross

Re: Hip resurfacing at +6 weeks

charles, 6 weeks is very early days yet in your recovery. - you have to learn to walk before you can run (pun absolutely intended!!!).
i still have trouble lifting my left leg and no way could i do straight leg lifts at 6 weeks. with the right leg it was much easier and i have no trouble at all. i know we all want to recover quickly from hip ops, but it really does take as long as it takes, you will find you will still be getting stronger 2 years on in some respects.
three things i would recommend for you - exercise, more exercise, and even more exercise! from what you've said, i reckon you're doing fine.
sue

Re: Hip resurfacing at +6 weeks

Charles999,
I am 57 years old. I have osteoarthritics in both hips. My Doctor wants me to wait till I am 60 years. He recommended a full hip replacement. I can walk short distances ( one block). I am still able to work currently. Can you give me any advise on preparing for full hip surgery?
