Are there Tummy Toners for THR?

Hi, I'm going to have THR in two weeks and wish they could do a little tummy tuck at the same time! I'm not heavy, but would like to be flatter in front. When my hip gave me problems my activity level went down and weight loss became difficult. I am really concerned now that I found out I am not supposed to ever lift my knee above a 90 degree angle, how can I do crunches or otherwise exercise my middle???? Thanks for any suggestions.

I believe there are ways to modify ab crunches to comply with restrictions. Ask your physical therapist and I'm sure they can show you what you are allowed to do. Im having surgery in a month and I am under the impression that I will be able to do a lot of the exercises I could do before with some modifications. I expect to be talking with the physical therapist about when I can go back to the gym and I plan to ask what kind of exercises I can do, what machines I should avoid and how I can modify core exercises to make sure I don't run risk of dislocation. I don't think you will be forever unable to do ab crunches, but you may have to modify your technique and you may have to wait for a while after surgery to do a workout that includes them.

One additional thought--you might check out books relating to exercising on the ball. I've done crunches on the ball that would not require putting your hip at a forbidden angle--but you would have to be able to balance yourself so as to avoid a tumble. Might not want to try the ball without spotters nearby. Anyway, might ask your physical therapist about doing crunches on an exercise ball.

Hey Maggie, thanks so much for your reply. I think it's going to be okay! I've been doing more checking with a PT too, and your idea about the ball is a good one. Stabilizing myself on the ball might also be a good way to exercise the thigh muscles without too much pressure. I've been able to drop 2 more pounds since last week and my countdown is 11 days. I am going out to get a couple short wrap around skirts to make life easier. I'm so looking forward to not taking pain medication all the time! Good luck with your surgery too!
