Knee going off track?

So, I have had excrutiating knee pain since wed.. almost a week.. Went to the doctor today & he said he didnt think it was ligament tears.. He said he thinks it is my knee cap going off track & crunching against the bone.. He said surgery can ussually fix this since my knee pops out of place at least once a week.. Has anyone had this happen? Did you have to have surgery? My doctors office is scheduling me to go see a specialist in my area.. I just dont know how fast I can get an appointment to see him. If anyone has more information I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Re: Knee going off track?

I have this problem. I have been dealing with it for more than 2 and a half years. Normally, doctors like you to try to strengthen your quad muscles by doing physical therapy before surgery is done. I was in PT for six months in 2006. It did not help my situation. My kneecap is always out of place to the outside part of my leg unless I wear a knee brace that holds it in place. I was finally able to get surgery scheduled. I will be having a scope and lateral release surgery on September 9th.

Re: Knee going off track?

Well, my knees have similar tracking problems, which caused very painful dislocations while I was doing mundane things (swimming, walking, jumping on one leg) and I was on crutches for two of them, so it might be a bit different for you. But, I had to have extensor-mechanism realignment surgery because the dislocating was just too much of a problem, as was tracking. There were other surgical options, but I'm an athlete and that was the most concrete one for me.

Before I developed the dislocating problem, though, I went to PT for the tracking problems, and it really does help if you strenghthen quads and the inside of your knees. It makes the tracking problems less painful. Hope that helps a bit...
