Soreness in non-operated hip

Has anyone had soreness/discomfort in non-operated hip/knee while using cane. The knee on my non-operated leg has been achy for the past couple days and am wondering if it is partly due to the pressure I am placing on left leg/knee while using cane. I am concentrating and trying not to limp, but at three weeks post surgery know I am not uniformly putting weight evenly on both hips/legs.

I don't want to mess up unoperated leg after all this!!!! Ice helps.

Maggie

Re: Soreness in non-operated hip

Yes, the opposite side will always have problems while you are in a boot/surgical shoe/on crutch/cane, etc. It is having to take the load and your gait is not the same. Do lots of stretching to help this.

Re: Soreness in non-operated hip

Hi Maggie:

My reaction to this is that maybe you might try using your walker a bit longer - the walker really distributes the load better than a cane.

Re: Soreness in non-operated hip

Thanks shirley. My solution is to mix it up a bit and to use both. Taking shorter walks with friends using cane and longer walks using walker. Left knee/hip feels better today.

Hi Maggie:

That is exactly what I did and it has worked well. You are still very early in your recovery and no great rush is necessary to ditch the walker and rely solely on the cane. You will know when to do that and also when you don't need the cane anymore.
