Unhappy Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

I am a 25 year old female with major medical history including cancer 4 times. At 4 I had Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in my left leg from mid tibia (shin bone) up to the top of the knee. I had 18 months of radiation and chemotherapy. As a result my leg and knee didn't completely develop properly and is smaller and weaker than my other. I have had problems with it off and on for over ten years but the last 5 have been much worse. Originally doctors guessed osgoodslaughters disease which I would have grown out of by now. Next guess was Patella femoral pain syndrome which athletes tend to get from over use and I'm no where close to being an athlete. About a month and a half ago the pain just got unbearable, swelling is terrible, and knee pops all the time no matter what direction I move it pops. Due to everything I've been through I have an extremely high tolerance of pain and I can't take this any longer. I've been taking two percocet (narcotics) every 4-6 hours just so I can make it from my bed to the bathroom and back. When I walk my knee will lock and give out with no warning and I fall to the floor. I've had a bone scan and it came back normal. Which rules out bone cancer but that's about it. I went a saw my GP on Tues. and he is guessing I've torn my meniscus and wanted me to have an MRI ASAP. Well the soonest I could get in is this coming Tues. Unfortuanately things have continued to get worse since I saw my doctor. I have a brace I wear on my knee for support and I'm waking up in the morning and having to have it above my heart for 5 or 6 hrs. before I the swelling is down enough to put my brace on and that's with icing it every 2 hours for 20 min. I can't completely straighten it nor bend it due to the increase in pain. I'm at my whits end. Not to mention during the day all I'm able to do is lay in bed. There are times the swelling gets worse again during the day and cuts off my circulation and I have to take my brace back off. I don't know if I need to go to the ER or just suffer through it util I get I diagnosis. I keep trying to tell myself only two more days but reality is that is just until I can have the test done then who knows how long it will be before I get the results and then get in to see a specialist and get something done about whatever is wrong.
Any advice at this point is much appreciated.
I'm really struggling and don't know what to do.
Someone PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Re: Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

Does your knee pain increase when you walk up or down stairs? Patellofemoral pain syndrome does not just happen to athletes. I was diagnosed with that two years ago, and I am not an athlete. My knee issues started when I stood up from a kneeling position. I just had surgery two and a half weeks ago to correct problems associated with it.

Please post an update after you get your MRI results!

Re: Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

I can barely stand the pain doing nothing let alone walking. But yes, the pain is much worse doing stairs. I sit down and go up and down them on my butt using my arms because I can't stand the pain doing them normally. Thankfully I am currently back at my apartment inwhich there is an elevator but I've only let my apartment once all week and that was only to go next door to the pharmacy and I paid for it severely that night.

I know patellafemoral pain syndrome isn't something that only athletes get however, it is most common in athletes and it is cause by over use which doesn't fit and it is a very general over used diagnosis that most doctors just use when they have no other explanation for your symptoms. Not to mention if that was what was wrong then the things I did a year ago (rest, ice, compression, elevation, and Physical Thereapy) should have taken care of it and it should be getting better with the rest, ice, compression, and elevation I've been doing for the past month and instead of getting better it is continuing to get worse! Although it is to the point now that it really can't get much worse. Considering it is already swelling so much it is cutting off my circulation and I would rank the pain about a 20 on a scale of 1-10. A week ago I ranked it a 9. That's how much worse it is getting and how rapidly.

Re: Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

cardshark,

I'm not sure where you got your education on patellafemoral pain syndrome but it's not something that is relegated to athletes, regular folk are diagnosed with it all the time. Also it is not something that is necesarily "cured" with the things that you have done, it can progress into a very painful situation, requiring arthroscopy to find out what exactly the problem is. You said your GP is working on it, have you been to an OS, and if not I guess I'm curious as to why since they would be the expert on this type of problem? Hopefully the MRI will help you find out what the problem is.

Re: Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

My knowledge of patellafemoral syndrome is based on personal research I have done, removed. I know the things I've done won't necessarily "cure" it however it should at least improve it some and it hasn't. I've been to an orthopedic doctor that specializes in sports medicine several times and the first time he ordered the PT and he is who has the diagnosis of the patellafemoral syndrome. He ordered no test did very little of an examination. This time he just gave me a brace and a bill and basically said suffer through it. Which is why I've resorted back to my GP. I am currently on complete disability and have to have a referral from my GP in order to see any specialist so he has ordered the bone scan that I had and now the MRI and he said the next step is to see a different orthopedic doctor but he isn't referring me until after the MRI so he knows if it needs to be an orthopedic surgeon or not.

At this point I'm calling my GP in the morning to see about getting crutches to use until whatever the problem is can be taken care of. This is rediculous. I'm 25 years old and can barely get out of bed to go to the bathroom which is right next to my bedroom. I haven't gotten the mail in over a month because it requires going out of my apartment, down the hall to the elevater, and into the lobby and there is no way I can physically do that right now because my knee will give out and the pain is so severe.

Re: Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

You need to get a second opinion with an orthopedic surgeon who will listen to you. All of your symptoms seem to fit patellofemoral pain syndrome. I tried PT several times before and after I was diagnosed with it, and it didn't help my situation either. Unfortunately, PT doesn't always help with this type of problem. Crutches may be a good idea. You said you haven't left your apartment much due to the pain. Do you have family or friends to help you with things?

I would definitely get a second opinion...and I would tell the GP to get me the referral NOW, not when he thinks he wants to, he's not the one in pain. As for the crutches, you can get those at any pharmacy chain store, such as CVS, Rite Aid, Eckerds, etc.

Can you self-refer to an Orthopedic Surgeon? Some health plans allow you to make your own referral - no need for your GP to do a formal referral. Given your history though, your GP should immediatley have referred you to an OS as soon as the pain occurred and didn't go away.

Re: Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

I talked to my GP mon. and he sent me to the ER. Sat. and Sun. I woke up and had to elevate my knee for 4 hours before it was small enough to even get my brace on. Unfortunately the ER didn't due much. They gave me a shot to help with the pain and knock me out and sent me home with crutches and I went and had my MRI at 10:30 yesterday. After my MRI they wanted a couple x-rays so I had those done and now I'm waiting on the results. I must say though the crutches have made a huge difference. I was told my doctor shoud have the MRI results in 24-48 hours so hopefully the office will call tomorrow and let me know what it showed. I just hope it showed something to explain my problems so we can do whatever needed to fix it. If my GP's office doesn't call back by tomorrow evening I'm calling them first thing Fri. I'll try to let everyone know when and if I find out anything.

No, I can't refer myself to a doctor. I have to get a referal from my GP.

Re: Severe knee pain- just guessing with no answers yet

I finally talked to my GP's office today and a number of abnormal growths have shown up on the MRI of the knee. They said most likely they are bone cysts but without further testing there is no way to know for sure that they aren't cancerous tumors, especially considering I've already had cancer 4 times and this is where it was the first time. They said to continue managing the pain the best I can with pain pills, elevation, ice, rest, and crutches and they are working on scheduling an appointment with a different orthopedic specialist. So once again I was right not the doctor and it isn't just patellafemoral syndrome. If anyone else is having issues and don't agree with doctor and you're gut tells you different than the doctor says be sure to listen to your gut and see a different doctor until someone listens!!
