When to start PT for an ACL and Meniscus tears

I have a partial tear to my ACL and to the medial meniscus. One doctor wanted me to start PT right away, another seemed to say 'take it easy' for a while first - both think it will take about 10 weeks before we'd know if I'd need surgery. It's been about 3 weeks since the accident. I'm wondering what the up sides and down sides of either starting PT very soon are as opposed to waiting a few more weeks.

I'd be very grateful for any input.

Re: When to start PT for an ACL and Meniscus tears

By waiting a little while, you'll give your knee some time to adjust to not having an ACL. Starting physio too soon can cause stress on the injury, but after a few weeks, you should be okay now. If you do need the ACL reconstruction you should have physio before it anyway to strengthen it and your muscles, so if you're active and want to get back to normal activities, starting physio as soon as possible is good.

If you've already waited 3 weeks I'd definitely start PT now. You need to get your knee strenghthened up either way, surgery or not. And you've basically already given it the "take it easy" aproach that the one doc suggested.
