Do you need pt after meniscus surgery?

I had a pretty big tear in my mensicus.. I had surgery on mon Nov 17th. I see the dr on monday.. but I am curious.. if you had a meniscus tear & had surgery.. Did you need Physical Therapy? I am making it to the bathroom without crutches but my knee still hurts.. I am going to ask the doctor how long I am to be on crutches since he said as needed & I know others I have heard was walking within a couple days. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Do you need pt after meniscus surgery?

I've never had surgery for that one, beleive it or not, but if you're still having that much pain and such, I would definitely ask your doc bout it. PT is never a bad thing after knee surgery, even if just to get advice on which are the right excercises to be doing and the correct way to do them so you can re-strengthen your knee without injuring it.

Re: Do you need pt after meniscus surgery?

It's a good idea if you're not sure of exercises or anything to help it. PT helps with getting your mobility back and reducing swelling, as well as reducing surface pain with scars. That said, after a surgery this year I wasn't referred to a physio, but by then I knew enough of what I had to do to help the healing along.
