I have been having knee pain when lying down and only occasionally when up and about. This has been going on for several months and only 1 knee. The pain reminds me of when I had tennis elbow years ago, a slow intermittent throbbing. Arthritis, bursitis any idea. I am a 53 year old female.

It could be some kind of tendonitis...is there any specific position it hurts in? Like maybe only when you lay down and the leg is fully straight (without a bend in the knee)?
Maby you have fluid in your knee cap. press down on your knee that hurts . see how the area you press down on changes color. now do it on the other knee and see if it goes back to color faster than the other knee . if the knee that is giving you pain changes color from pressing a finger down lasts longer than the other go see an orthpedist . this may be a sign of inflamation. ps try hemmroid cream yes it sounds gross but it takes away pain and swelling.

I am new to this board. I saw your post Pink Menace and this is exactly the pain that I have daily. Did you ever find out what it was?
I was hoping to see an answer to the problem this thread is about. A friend who has been seeing a doctor has had this problem for the past month. He cannot lie down at night to sleep, but has to sleep pretty much like sitting in a chair to be able to sleep with minimal pain. I haven't talked to him lately, just his wife. I was wondering if maybe massage might help or exercises to help upper leg....like quads as I had a problem after my knee surgery. PT didn't help. I went to massage therapist who said that some of my upper thigh muscles were spasming and needed to be relaxed so the other muscles could get the most benefit of strengthening exercises. I've also heard that if you have knee problems, the problem is more likely due to problems in hip area.
