Generally you will have a few weeks with restrictions--no bending past 90 degrees, no driving till you are off pain medication, things like that. You will need help at home for at least the first two weeks after the operation--help with cooking, cleaning, etc. Most people start off using a walker (or sometimes crutches), then graduate to a cane and then unaided walking. It's different for each person. It sometimes takes a few weeks before you are able to sleep on the operated side. I had to sleep on my back for ages--and just hated it.
Most obvious after effect of surgery--no hip pain.
It might be helpful for you to read the posts at the top of the board on "six months after hip surgery." These posts are very informative and contain a lot of discussion about what to expect in the first six months after surgery.
