Smile TKR of right knee

Hi, hope someone can help me answer some of my concerns.
I had TKR on 2/05/2009 it is now 4/09/2009 and i still have swelling and pain. Also my incision is still not healed completely. Recently at night ive been getting horrible muscle spasms. How long does it actually take for all these syptoms to end. I am in therapy 3 times a week and am doing well.
I also upon awakening can barely walk until im on my feet for a few minutes, is this normal. I just want to get back to the norm of life.....Thanks

Re: TKR of right knee

I've had both replaced and you sound pretty typical to me. TKR's are a "brutal" surgery and it takes a long time for all the pain and swelling to go away. the muscle spasms are normal. Takes up to 8 months for muscles to completely heal and longer for nerves. Ask your doc for something for spasms at bedtime. As for the scar not healing well, that can be a function of poor blood flow. Try heat and I always liked aloe vera gel or vitamin A to rub on the scar to promote healing. Heat will encourage blood flow.

You morning stiffness is because all the fluid has settles into one place overnight and it needs to get moving again. Called "gelling phenomenon". It will get better as the swelling down.

With TKR's time is truly the best healer. It takes a full year to really recover. Give yourself time and your body a lot of TLC.

gentle hugs..........Jenny(10th anniversary of my knees was 2/1/09)

Re: TKR of right knee

Thanks Jenny, really needed to hear from someone else about the problems im having. My doctor did give me something for spasms at night, but they really dont work, im still up several times a night taking hot baths. The heat seems to really help. Thanks again....Kathy1313

Re: TKR of right knee

Why don't you try getting one of those Therma Care wraps and using that at night, They have some new ones that last 12 hours and are shaped just for the knee. I've even gotten the ones for the back and cut them down for my thighs. I've also used them long-ways on the back of my calves. Got me through 5 hours of driving with bad achilles tendinitis. But buy the good one, not the store brand. Made that mistake and they are nowhere as good as the real ones.

Did they put that machine on you after surgery that massages the calf to prevent blood clots? It feels like a progressive massage starting around the ankle then going up the calf. You might be able to rent one from a surgical supply store and that might help as well. As your doc and a script should pay for the rental.

But you'll get there. I remember spending a lot of time taking hot bathes after surgery. It always made me feel so much better. So I used a heating pad in bed with a towel over it and that helped too. But those bathes relaxed all of me!

So if heat helps, take a look at some different ways to keep your muscles warm and the blood flowing.

Jenny

Re: TKR of right knee

Once again, thanks Jenny will do. I guess you get what you pay for, going to the pharmacy soon, will be picking up a termal wrap. Thanks for your response.
