6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

Have not been able to find postings on if still becoming easily exhausted after any level of effort 6 weeks after a tkr is common. My knee is doing good. No problems there. I don't think I am overdoing it. I really feel I should have more stanima and not feel so tired all the time. Sleeping is pretty good. Anyone else with this problem?

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

I just posted this yesterday. It is so nice to know that someone else is having stamina problems. Are you better? I need some hope.

I had a TKR on June 2nd. I have progressed to a range of motion of 126 and everyone says I'm doing fine. I don't feel like I'm doing fine though. I still have a lot of pain going down the stairs...I can't sleep through the night, and I alternate between good days and bad days. Take yesterday for example. I rose with energy and went to physical therapy. Afterwards I spent some time at my school with other teachers. I rested some in the afternoon and then took my first walk through our woods. I walked on trails that had been cut by my husband and were relatively smooth. Not much sleep last night...hurting legs, etc. This morning, I was extra stiff and the stiffness has lasted all day. It was almost too painful to do any exercises. I just don't have enough energy to get me through a normal day. School does not start for me until August 20th, but as I teach elementary children, I am starting to worry about having enough stamina by then. Am I being too hard on myself? I keep thinking that I should be basically as good as I am going to get. Please advise!

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

I just answered this for Serinet.....yes you should be tired. A TKR is one of the toughest surgeries on the human body. You lose lots of blood. You've essentially had both the bones above and below your knee broken. Your body is trying to heal, grow new bone into the prosthesis, and replace red blood cells. Your fatigue is your body telling you it needs to rest and heal. Listen to it. You will feel a lot better fairly soon but it takes time to heal and for your body to get used to having a bunch of metal and plastic inside it.

Average time for full recovery is 1 year. So give it time. It will get better, I promise. I had both knees done at the same time and everything not only doubled but actually quadrupled. Took over 2 years to get rid of the post-op anemia.

But I'm now 10 years post-op and love my knees. Just give your body some time to heal. Sleep is the #1 way to promote healing so nap frequently and sleep well at night. It will get better.

good luck................Jenny

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

It is encouraging to see the replies. I am 5 weeks post op, and have fatigue that keeps me from activities I should be able to do as the TKR heals w/o problems. To make matters worse when I spoke to my GP about the fatigue, she ran tests and now I come back with several positives for Lyme disease.

I just hop this come to pass.

Hi Greg:

Well, I sure hope you don't have Lyme disease! However, these joint replacements can leave us feeling mighty fatigued for many weeks and maybe even months. Best thing to do is listen to your body - and when you get tired, lie down and rest for a while. Don't fight it! 5 weeks post op is pretty "early days" as our British friends put it. Major surgeries always leave us feeling tired it has seemed to me.

Please stop being so hard on yourself.

And let us know how you are doing.

Shirley H.

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

Well I'm glad to hear it's not just me! I have no stamina these days. That gets frustrating. I still have 6 weeks before I can go back to work, and I think I'm going to need every bit of that time. I was expecting a lot more pain, which has not been that bad. I didn't realize how much this surgery would really take out of me.

Hi Jules:

I think that any kind of surgery takes more out of us than we realize. At least - any that I have had took about a year each to really get back to feeling like Myself.

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

I'm 5 1/2 weeks post-op TKR, and am both tired and depressed. I really can't blame the blood loss as my hemoglobin is just fine. The surgical aspect is fine, too. The ROM is what gets me, and makes me feel so depressed. I just can't seem to get beyond 97 -- on my own, and that is with great difficulty. When the therapist got it to 103, I almost swatted him. I can take pain, but when the 1 to 10 scale is completely off the chart, then that is a bit much.

Maybe I'm just too impatient? I'm 78 and wonder if age has anything to do with it. Normally I am very active, doing things and teaching a cooking class, but right now I just want to curl up in my pillows and tune out the world.

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

Exit 148...you are at about the same stage of post op as I am. You need to give yourself a break!! You are 25 years older than I am...and I am exhausted still. This isn't a quick heal surgery. Even if you consider this a 3 month healing process...we are only half way there. And I have a feeling that it is going to be many many months after this before we feel "back to normal." My physical therapist hasn't measured my ROM since I started therapy. I think that is a good thing, so I don't get hung up on a number. He said I'm doing well, so I believe him!

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

It took some time, but finally getting my strength back. Last week I rejoined my bike group and did 27 miles on Friday... Something that when I made my post I doubted I would ever be doing in the immediate future. It is now 8 weeks post op and many things are getting better, but not overnight.

I still get tired at times, and now just rest and take it in stride. The knee is fine, but leg gets strange feelings from time to time. Will watch as more time progresses.

I guess the deal is to not get discouraged!

Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted

Hi I am 7 months post op and still don't have the stamina I used to have. I often come home and have to lie down for a while before I can face making dinner. However, it is getting better as time passes. If I do too much one day then the next I pay for it, but am finding this is happening less as time passes. My surgeon has told me it takes up to 2 years to recover from a TKR and not to beat myself up.

Smile Re: 6 weeks after tkr & still exhausted NO MORE

One year later. I was able to get back on my bicycle in 6 weeks and do 4 miles. Next week 10 miles. I joined my bike group and began cycling 2 time a week averaging 30 miles. In December we switched to hiking and I was able to hike 141 miles before we went back to cycling in April. Year to date I have cycled 1400 plus miles and I am very thankful for the surgery. A little patience goes a long way.
