My boyfriend had a bursectomy and IT band lengthening surgery on 8/21. He is freaking out now. The pain is out of control. He is a chronic pain sufferer and has CIDP. He is complaining that the area of the surgery is itching and burning very badly. Its only a little red where the steri strips were. Most of them came off and the incision is dry and its not inflammed. He doesn't have a fever but he still thinks its infected. There is swelling but no redness. He has had infections before. Its definitely not cellulitis and there is nothing there that makes me think that anything wrong is going on but I'm certainly not a doctor. How much itching and burning is normal after surgery? He never complained of this after any surgeries and has had his share. He is convinced something is wrong. The hospital he had the surgery was at HSS in NY and they don't have an ER so if we go to a hospital he has to go across the street to NY Cornell. Any fast advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
I forgot to add that I gave him atarax (he can't take benadryl) for the itching which helped about 70%. The only other thing I wanted to add is that he still can't put much pressure on the leg and when he sits up he starts to sweat alot from the pain. The surgeon is aware of this but didn't seem too concerned. He has a follow up appointment later this week.
