First post op exam 16 days after the hip replacement

Hi fellow hip replacement people!

Today my grand daughter took me to the clinic for my post op exam with my hip replacement surgeon. I will have another one 4 weeks from today.

Everything is perfect! I can now take a shower - water can go over the incision but not to use soap or washcloth or touch the area.
Along with this, no more dressing bandage on the incision. Girls, I can't wait to wash my hair.

The x-ray of my new replacement looks wonderful, and the two hip replacements match up perfectly. I of course still use my walker - love that thing.

You all can imagine how I am rejoicing today!

I will use up my few remaining meds and then go to acetaminophen if I need a little relief for any sensitivity.

I of course will still observe all restrictions, and continue doing my pressing -against-the-mattress leg exercises, both day and during the night. I will do a lot of walking around home.

I am planning on going grocery shopping in about a week, allowing plenty of time for the meds to get out of my body before my first trip. Driving itself will be no problem since it is my left hip this time. The first time around my right leg was sensitive for a few trips but that soon was over. I didn't have any trouble using the brake and gas pedals that time around.

A visiting RN will come tomorrow to check my INR. She will have one of the new $20,000 hand-held gadgets. I am so glad they have these now because there is no way I could get to a lab or clinic to have the consistency of my blood tested - I am on warfarin till September 22.

A PT will come tomorrow but I plan to tell him I see no need for home PT - my thigh muscles are in great shape. I think that the PTs at the rehab facility realized that I didn't need much PT there either. But the health care people will want to have official word that I don't need PT.

This has been a very happy day for me.

Shirley H.

Re: First post op exam 16 days after the hip replacement

That's great to hear!

I'm just back from my trip to Italy. All went well. I walked many miles every day without any trouble on the operated right hip--it is perfect now. The left hip did ok most of the time, so I was pleased. I had my 1 year checkup right before leaving on the trip and doctor said it was great--no restrictions at all for right hip. I don't have to go back for a checkup for four more years. However, he eyed my xrays and said "I'll be seeing you before then for the left hip." I agreed. Don't know when I'm going to do the left hip but it will be sooner rather than later I think. So, will follow your progress on left hip with great interest Shirley! Thanks for the report. Maggie

Hi Maggie:

Have been absent here since my computer quit! Now trying to get used to new laptop and don't like it but have to have something to bank online. Have new e-mail address and will soon have to re-register with a new user name and am pondering what name to use. I have missed terribly reading this forum and hope that soon I will have my new user name and can continue contributing.
My left hip replacement coming along. It was done August 24 so that is just a month ago today. I am doing OK but this time operated leg has been swollen and hip surgeon says swelling can occur for 90 days post surgery. I only two days ago could get my shoe on that left foot but now notice swelling gradually going down and foot and leg getting to look more normal. Didn't have but a tiny bit of swelling after first hip replacement - just goes to show each hip replacement can have different effects.
I am considering name Golden Goose but welcome suggestions!

Have missed you all and hope I can pick up where I left off.

Shirley H.

Congratulations! I am 1 year post op and could not be happier. I have so much more of my life back. I never imagined it would be so "Helpful." Work hard at rehab-the price you pay in therapy pays dividends.
