Hip Bursitis/Osteoarthritis, please help!

I have been suffering from incredible pain in my legs for the past 5 years. I am 23 years old and have not had any injury to cause this. The past year and a half have been an absolute nightmare for me. And even more recently, I literally can't walk or move without people helping me and even then it still hurts.

My pain switches sides of my butt/legs about every 2 weeks or so but never on the same side at once. It starts in my butt and shoots down my leg. It also shoots in my hips/groin and down the front of my thigh. It typically ends at the knee. I am constantly in pain but walking or moving positions in bed is the worst, this is when it shoots horribly. Sitting in a chair is not that bad for me...however getting out of a chair and then walking is something I dread. I haven't walked normal since I was probably 20, I walk with a heavy limp if I can even walk at all.

I have been to many doctors, a neurosurgeon, and physical therapy multiple times. My pain was thought to be sciatica caused from herniatied discs, piriformis syndrome and/or sacroiliac. I religiously did all the stretches and exercises possible for about 2 years until they got impossible to do because of pain. I have taken many drugs but now my current drug intake includes: Gabapetin 300mg 6 times a day, hydrocodone (as many as 4 a day), and just started oxycodone. I can't find relief from anything. I have an SI belt, TENS unit, and other things to try to help...nothing works. My PT discovered I have very uneven leg length and uneven and weak hip flexors. When she stretched me my legs were abnormally bendable and would pop near my hips. I went to a podiatrist to get special inserts for my shoes to even up the 'shorter' leg.

I have had 2 MRIs, ultrasounds, and an x-ray of my spine/back that didn't show the herniatied discs all my specialists predicted would be there. This past week we did something we haven't done yet -- x-rayed the hips. My PCP didn't want to diagnose anything right away understandably, but she said I have hips that are more commonly on an elderly person and not of a young healthy person. Where the socket is, my hips are not smooth where they are supposed to be. She is very concerned and set me up to see an orthopedic surgeon immediately next week.

So here I am begging for advice from anyone who has experience with this. My life has been hell because of this and I want to be a normal 23 year old(or just be able to walk), not living the life of an elderly person yet. Does something like hip bursitis or osteoarthritis have symptoms like I have just mentioned? Would be possible for someone who is 23 to have it? I am at the point where I want a wheelchair. I dread having to move or walk for anything and half time am physically unable to. I try to stay as inactive as possible, which has obvious health consequences, and I don't want to gain weight because of this I used to exercise and am in good shape. I'm just very scared but at the same time hopeful that this COULD be my problem and I can do whatever it takes to fix this. Thank you for reading

Re: Hip Bursitis/Osteoarthritis, please help!

Im no doctor. but I do recall having similar symptoms when I was in college (about a hundred years ago!) it was a sciatic nerve for me...
it took babying myself for about 12 weeks, then being cautious for another 6.
I dont recall when it finally went away but it did.
It did however flare back up when I was pregnant w'/ my daughter (not my 2nd one tho)
they did tests then too, but not as many..
ultimately I just had to stop everything.
I think I did it in a dance class or doing some exercise where I fell...
best of luck...
you may find a dr who will give you a weeks worth of steroids to calm down the inflamation --and if you lay off irritating it it may go away.
hope Im correct.
i wish you well.

Unhappy Re: Hip Bursitis/Osteoarthritis, please help!

It's most likely your hips. I'm going thru the same exact pain and i'm only 27, after 5 years they finally did an xray of my hips, and it turns out i was born with shallow hip sockets, causting early osteoartritis. I'm going to see a doctor in Boston next month to decided which surgery they want to do. Either a total hip replacement or osteotomy.

I too experienced much of the pain you have.I saw an orthopedic doc..took x-rays,told me I had severe osteoarthritis of my left hip.My hip socket had deteriated so much that I was bone on bone and my leg had shortened.Had total hip replacement on Apr.12,of this year.Stayed 3 days in hospital,28 days at rehab facility and am now back home.Feel great, pain gone. Will still need about 4 to 5 more months of rehab to get to be 100%.Sounds like a hip replacement could be in your future. Good luck!

Re: Hip Bursitis/Osteoarthritis, please help!

I too suffer with hip pain, burning and aching. I have trochanteric bursitis and have since found out that I have lupus. Have they ever tested you for RA or lupus? Just curious, sometime those same things are a result, you never know.

Re: Hip Bursitis/Osteoarthritis, please help!

Hi, I am also 23 and have never had a bad injury...
For the past 6 months or so my right hip would really hurt if I sat down for more than an hour. I have had lower back (SI joint) pain for as long as I can remember, if I lifted something too heavy or laid on my back for too long. As of last week my right hip, back, butt, and leg would ache and/or hurt almost constantly. It hurt more when I sat or layed down but felt a little bit better when I moved, stood, or walked. At times I would get sharp shooting pains down my leg, other times it would be a burning sensation, and at times my entire leg and foot would go numb (pins and needles). I did a bit of research and assumed it was sciatica. I ended up calling my dr's office last week explaining the type of pain I felt. Unfortunately my dr was on vacation so I was told to go to a walk-in clinic to get an x-ray form for my hip and back. The clinic dr thought it may be sciatica and prescribed me some naproxen (an anti-inflamatory) and an x-ray form. I then went to the chiropractor, assuming it was sciatica, to fix the problem and "un-pinch" my sciatic nerve. Today I called my dr office to see if they had received my x-ray results and they advised me that I have mild osteoarthritis on both sides. I am not sure what to do about it but I am a little more calm knowing that it is not as rare as I originally thought for someone my age, after seeing your post. Hope this helps! Let me know if you find a treatment that helps you so that I can be sure to try it out.
Thanks!
