Hematoma in calf after knee surgery

After 8 months after knee replacement surgery my husband had calf pain. We went to his surgeon that did the surgery and he ordered a sonogram. It revealed it had a large blood mass in the calf. He said evidently the body did not absorb the blood after surgery and was causing the calf pain. He ordered him to use heat, massage, walking to see if it help to absorb it. He is to go back in 30 days. Has anyone else had this experience after knee surgery or any suggestions.

Re: Hematoma in calf after knee surgery

I am 4 mo post op w/ Oxford left medial uni. Implant looks good on x-ray. Complications from recurring Bakers cysts (2). One ruptured w/ leakage into calf (ouch). Drained under ultrasound w/ good result. Continuing to investigate why knee is getting so irritated with activity. R/O lateral tears, allergic reaction (cement). Need to watch for DVT and compartment syndrome due to intrafascial pressure. I remain optimistic. Knee itself feels better than before surgery -- BUT these complications in the calf SUCK !! Any thoughts and ideas would be helpful... seemore48

I would think a wide bore needle into the sac and suck it out. If it has been around for 8 months it will be encapsulated and take for ever to be absorbed.

Re: Hematoma in calf after knee surgery

Hi James -- foloow-uo. Had revision to TKR about 2 months ago, and results are spectacular.. Biking, playing tennis, etc w/ no pain. Guess I wasn't a good candidate for PKR in retrospect!! CM
