Re: bad calf pain started after 2nd knee replacement

Sounds like you might not have good extension. I'm at -15 on my right knee and if I do any walking or stand in place for more that about 5 minutes the calf gets very painful. I would see your doc, maybe more PT or perhaps MUA would be in order if that is the problem.

Re: bad calf pain started after 2nd knee replacement

When they put in new knees, they lengthen your legs to their original length. Arthritis crumbles the cartilage and then wears down bone so your legs shrink in length. It takes time for the muscles and especially tendons like the Achilles at the back of the calf, to stretch to the length they should be.

I came out of surgery 2 inches taller than when I went in. It takes time for everything to adjust. And BTW, my back problems got much better after the knees were replaced as I finally was walking on the bottoms of my feet instead of the sides. My posture got a lot better but again, it takes time for the body to adjust. Ask for some PT to help strengthen your back and stretch your leg muscles if you hurt a lot.

Re: bad calf pain started after 2nd knee replacement

I had my right knee replaced in 2008 and despite the hosp giving me the wrong blood thinner causing my knee to expand to 5 times it's normal size and lengthy recovery, I had good luck(pain free) untill the fall of 2010. It began with my big toe having Gout like symtoms that slowly moved to the calf/shin area and now it the knee itself on the lower inside of the new joint. my pain is unreal and when I walk it feels like my lower leg is gonna snap in two. I got addicted to pain meds and joined a Methadone clinic that has helped me greatly except now, the pain is close to the pain I had before the replacement surgery. I too have low back problems and was diagnosed with another bulging disc the summer of my replacement. I'm sick over this whole thing.

Re: bad calf pain started after 2nd knee replacement

Let us give you a test to do, seems simple but can tell you a lot.

We know you can walk 50 yards on the flat before pain.

Now try and walk uphill and see if it remains at 50 yards.

One more test, after resting up try 50 yards on the flat: rest for a few minutes and try walking another 50 yards on the flat: then rest again and then another 50 the same way.
Tell us the results.
Also, do you or have you ever smoked?
James
