Two weeks after second hip replacement, I am having knee pain. I think I had some similar pain when I had first hip done, but can't really remember. I'm assuming this is because muscles now being used properly and gait has changed. Anyone else have this issue.? What did you do to relieve the pain? How long did it last?
Just a follow up--Had my first follow up visit last week and was told that this knee pain was common and as I suspected a result of changes in gait. I am finally, with both hips fixed, walking properly. Physician's assistant said it would subside in time and if by time of next visit (with the surgeon at 6 weeks), if it was still bothering me, the surgeon might order some physical therapy since it could be tendinitis.
Today, however, I had a physical therapist/massage therapist friend do a lyphatic massage which helps with swelling in the operated leg and she also worked on my knee. It feels much, much better. So, I'm thinking a few more treatments like this will be in order!
Hi Larimergirl:
How interestng that the new hip changed your gait back to normal. This will be helpful to others who have noticed some pain while their body gets used to being back to normal after a hip replacement.
Glad to hear that the swelling can be reduced with lymphatic message. That too is helpful information. We learn from each other here.

Glad to see your post regarding knee pain. I am two weeks post right hip THR. Everything has gone well, no pain in the hip to speak of, but swelling in the leg is uncomfortable and sensitivity to pressure from the calf to the thigh...like a bruise. Moving easily on two crutches, full weight bearing...PT tomorrow (outpatient) expect I will be able to progress to one crutch. Basically on no pain relievers, except tylenol. My knee hurts somewhat as well, especially at night. I do elevate and ice during the day in an attempt to minimize swelling and try to get out to walk 2-3x per day for about 10 to 15 min. All in all, very happy so far, and hope to be back to pretty full activity in about 4 or 5 weeks.

Hi rogcycleman:
I don't want to rain on your parade, but I think you are a little too optimistic about the length of time it might take to return to full activity. Six or seven weeks after your hip replacment is pretty soon for that in my opinion. But I might be wrong! We all heal at different rates but I can't imagine myself at that post op point being back to full time activity.
I am glad that you are feeling so positive though because that attitude will speed your rehab.
Please let mus know how things are going. Listen to your body and don't over do!

Thanks for your dose of realism. I do tend to be optimistic, but I have had two back surgeries and a fused ankle, all of which I recuperated from way ahead of schedule. Still, I have no illusions, and will not push to the point where I risk injury. I'll let you know how it goes.
Update at 5 weeks out from THR. Saw the surgeon last Friday, and he said the bone is fully healed and the prosthesis is perfectly positioned. I still have minor pain in the right leg...quad and shin, but the swelling is much improved and the hip feels fine. I started swinging a golf club Saturday with no pain, and rode my bike outdoors yesterday...some weakness in the right leg, but no real problems. Keys were preparation for the surgery (lost 10 pounds and exercised daily - swimming and biking, despite discomfort), and religious PT post surgery. I'd say I am back to 90% of normal, and pain free, compared to serious pain for the 6 months prior to surgery. I was using a cane for at least 4 months pre op, and as of last week, I am now walking with no assistive devices. Stairs are no problem, (I do have a bad left knee that hurts sometimes), but I always use the bannister. Bottom line, if anyone is suffering from hip issues and a THR is recommended, don't postpone it...quality of life can be much better.
