Partial ACL Tear

I had an MRI on my knee back in the beginning of this year, which showed a partial ACL tear along with some other problems. I was told I have 20% of my ACL remaining, but that the part that is still there is strong enough to keep my knee relatively stable.

I ended up having arthroscopic surgery in April, but not to fix the ACL. I had a problem with the cartilage in my knee where it was separating, and while they were in there fixing that they diagnosed plica syndrome which they also corrected. The only rehab plan I was given was to ride a stationary bike, which I did for several months (after about 5 months I switched to an elliptical machine) and to strengthen the muscles above my knee (I use a weight machine).

The reason I'm posting is that I still have pain in my knee during certain activities, starting a day after exercise and after periods where I've been on my feet for a long time. Does anyone know if the ACL could be causing my pain, or if it's more likely to be related to recovery from surgery still? The pain is sort of below my knee cap just under it. I feel like 8 months after the surgery I should be pain free - or I was hoping so anyway. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Partial ACL Tear

I sort of have a similar problem. My ACL has some laxity although it showed up completely fine on the MRI. It's possible that it's your ACL, everyone reacts differently to partial ACL tears. There are probably some doctors that would be willing to go in and reconstruct the ACL if you are persistent enough, although I'm not sure if that's what you really want to do. How did you tear your ACL if you don't mind me asking.

Re: Partial ACL Tear

I'm not sure how the tear occurred. I had a sports injury involving a twisting motion of my knee over 12 years ago, but never saw a doctor. I had off and on minor pain ever since then but it got more severe recently. It's possible that it came from that injury and then slowly degenerated further over time. I suspect I'll never know.
