Knee Replacement

I am 6 1/2 weeks post op from knee replacement and can only get 105 degrees bend. My straightening is perfect. Strength is great. I think I have lots of scar tissue that is preventing me from bending more. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? I am so discouraged and frustrated!

I went to PT today and had 110 degree bend! Sounds like a small step but I am so excited. I had accepted the fact that I wouldn't get past 105! Made my day!

Re: Knee Replacement

Just when things were looking up, I had a severe attack of diverticulitis and my doctor has told me to take it easy and not to go to PT this week! Does anyone know of PT I can do at home that will not put stress on my abdomen? Help! I don't want to lose all the progress I had made!

Re: Knee Replacement

Maybe a CPM machine at home. It moves your leg for you. At least you would't lose any movement. I can't think of anything else where stomach muscles wouldn't be involved.

Re: Knee Replacement

Use warm oil, any kind, to deep massage the knee cap area, this is a hard area to loosen up after TKR, use north and south motion, do several times a day. It helped me. Hang in there! My surgery was 8 weeks ago, the only time I reached 110 degrees was with p.t,. help and a great amount of pain.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I didn't have access to a CPM but it worked out ok. I am now at 125 degrees ROM. I went back to my dr. Wednesday and he could hardly believe my progress. I only have 4 more PT sessions! What are best exercises to do at home after I am dismissed?

Re: Knee Replacement

Just keep doing the exercise you are doing at therapy at home. Keep the knee moving. put on a pair of socks, sit in a chair and try to bend you leg under the chair as far as it can go.

Re: Knee Replacement

I have found that a Recumbent stationary bike helped me.Purchased one at Walmart for $140.00.
I usually work out with it for 10 minutes,3 times a day.

Thanks, Everyone! Today was my last PT. I finally reached 120 on my own with no help from Physical therapist! I have recumbent bike and plan to use it along with the exercises I was doing at PT. It was a long road to recovery but I can now say it was worth it!

Re: Knee Replacement

My best ROM exercise by far was rocking in a rocking chair. Broke through all of my ROM plateaus rocking in the sun.

I am just shy of 9 weeks out from my TKR, and at 130+ degrees.

Re: Knee Replacement

You aren't supposed to put anything on your staples. You could get an infection doing that.

Really I have a big front porch . How hard did you rock? Can you go into more detail? 2 weeks out of surgery!
