knee pain... 1 yr after total knee replacement

Anyone have this problem? 1 yr after tkr im still experiencing pain on daily basis. Not the same pain that i had before surgery, which was 24/7 arthritic pain, but pain on the inside of left knee. Hurts when i walk all the time, sometimes hurts to touch. It especialy hurts when im laying on my left side and i lift my left leg to move. Have told surgeon about it numerous times throughout year. Just had ct scan to check for stress fracture. Negative results. Had bloodwork to check for infection, negative results. Im limping pretty much all the time. Sometimes it feels like my leg is broke. Whats weird about this is ive had this pain since about 2 weeks after surgery. I was sitting down that day and when i sat i heard a loud pop in the exact spot where i currently have pain. Sounded like someone clapped their hands. Dr said it was probably a tendon moving around.im totally disgusted with outcome of tkr surgery and i still need my other knee done. I dont think so. I should also mention that im overweight, not sure if thats why im having pain. I would think dr would have told me that before surgery. Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: knee pain...1 yr after total knee replacement

Hi there,
Firstly please accept my apologies as I think I may have posted you a blank reply! I am no expert by any means but I doubt that a tendon moving would cause a sound like a clapping noise. nor result in the pain you are experiencing I think you really need to see your surgeon again or perhaps seek a second opinion. I am sorry this is not more helpful but I hope you can get to the bottom of this. You mention being overweight but you must have been passed as OK for surgery. That said, keeping a healthy weight can only be a good thing and I mention this with respect. Please keep me informed. I'm facing a revision 6 months post op but this is because I fell. Being in pain is misery and I send you my best wishes.

Re: knee pain...1 yr after total knee replacement

Hi there, I am also totally disappointed with my TKO. My problem is completely different to yours but somebody may be able to relate to it. I had my TKO about 5 or 6 years ago, and after a year it was obvious that it was a flop. After about 2 years I had to travel 500 Kms (maybe 350 Miles) south to see a specialist. He pulled, pushed, twisted and bent it and even pulled it longitudinally which showed a gap or end play of probably close to a quarter inch. When I had it done I couldn't leave hospital till I could bend it to about 90 degrees. These days I can bend it to about 120 or 130 degrees. After half an hour of all this maneuvering he said, " I can take you down to Perth (another 500 Kms) and open it up, but I can't guarantee anything". I said forget it, and I am still putting up with it today. Most days I have a really tight elastic knee bandage, and that gives me maybe a 80% to 90% improvement, and that is the way it will be to the end.

Re: knee pain...1 yr after total knee replacement

I'm sorry to hear of your experience. To suggest a further considerable journey and then tell you it may not help does little to inspire confidence and you must be so fed up with it all. From what I have read on these boards, it seems this surgery is either a great success or waste of time and in lots of cases leaving folk worse off. I'm 6 month post tkr and was told several weeks ago that the joint had "loosened" and that I might need a revision. Unfortunately the surgeon was very blase and clearly wanting to go home for the day as he was putting his coat on!! I decided to have a chat with my GP yesterday and he was far more forthcoming and explained fully what the surgeon should have told me. He reckons that just because it has loosened, a revision is not a given and it may well "slot back" (I had a fall in January). When I return to see the consultant in June, even if it has worsened, I am loath to have a revision, particularly so soon after the original tkr. I'm not giving up but preparing for the possibility of wearing a support in future, as you are doing. I guess it's best to be realistic and am grateful to you for your post. Best wishes.

Re: knee pain...1 yr after total knee replacement

Thanks for the information. Sorry to hear about your complications as well. Update on knee. Went to see partner of surgeon that operated on me. I am going in for a fluoroscopy of the knee and also an MRI on the hip. He said that the nerves connected withe hip run down the side of the knee I'm having problems with. I do have hip pain when walking. Makes sense. he also said that the pain is not reult of being too heavy.
