Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has had issues using ointments in their eyes at night. I have been using some kind of ointment at night since my lasik 5 months ago. I had corneal erosions that have improved,(nothing since April 28). I feel like I have irritated eyes and gunk in them. I thought it was dry eye, but my shirmer's test was 18. So, I'm wondering if my eyes are just tired of having something dumped in them all the time. Especially all night if any of you have had the same problems I would appreciate any input. Goba
I know that the night ointment works for some. But, it did not work for me. It may be the same for you. I found that my eyes would be unbearably irritated all day long after the couple of nights that I gave the ointment a try. And, after just one night of use, my eyes would be irritated in the same way for a couple days, and up to a week after one night of usage. Try not using it for about a week. Just put some regular (non-preserved/preservative-free) drops in as you lay down in bed and close your eyes. If you get up to use the bathroom or get a glass of water throughout the night, put some more drops in. Then, a minute or so before you get out of bed (maybe after you hit the snooze button) put some drops in so your eyes have some time to rewet before you have to make them face the day. Try that routine for a week or two and see if it helps. I couldn't tolerate the ointment. I only tried one brand so, it could simply be that I didn't find the right one. But, I have since just given up on the idea of the ointment. While my eyes are by no means great in the AM, they are better than when I used the ointment.
Hi Hating glasses, Thanks so much for the reply. Docs love those ointments!! My sister-in-law used it once after her lasik and got conjunctivitis! So, I am going to take your advice, I have been gunky for waaay to long. Thanks, Goba
My doctor never recommended an ointment. I tried it on my own. I just think that since we are all so different, not everything is going to work for everyone. Your eyes may be sensitive like mine. I had a problem with anything that sort of adhered to my eyes. I tried the Refresh Endura and it caused more problems than good for me. But, it worked out well for others.
I'm glad I could help. Let me know how it works out for you. It may not be what is causing you problems but, give it two weeks off of the ointment just to be sure. All of these drops, ointments, gels, etc...seem to need time to work themselves out of our eyes after we stop using them, for any changes to show. Same with a switch in brands. It is kind of like new shoes. You need to break a new drop in. Hehehe!
Hi Hating glasses, Well I didn't use my ointment last night, and I have to admit my eyes are a little sore today. So, I'm going to try and be brave and not go back unless it gets a lot worse. It's hard and scary to change, especially when things have improved, except for that feeling I got from using ointments. So, I'm going to hang in there and hope it goes away and I can just use my drops during the day. Thanks!! Goba
I may have said this before but you might try a gel instead. There are several that my doctors have suggested... Theratears Liquigel, Refresh Celluvisc, and Genteal Gel are all pretty good or so I've heard.
Hi Missy, Well I went without the ointment for about four nights. I did alright as long as I woke up once in the night and put in a drop. Well, I went back to the ointment. So, I went to my doctor yesterday, and he said that I have blepharitis ( I think it is spelled that way), anyway, I have to do the compresses etc. I can't help but wonder if all the ointments don't cause some clogging. To me it make sense. If we slapped vaseline on our nose every night we would get clogged pores!! Anyway, I started just last night using Dwelle at bedtime. We shall see, actually I have been better these days. My doctor did another Schirmer test, and my left eye was a 21 and my right was 15. So he thinks that a lot of my problem is the clogged glands. So, I have been inproving about every 2 months, even the doctor noticed that. So, hopefully things keep moving along. How are you doing? I hope well. Thanks for the concern, I really do appreciate it. Take care! Goba
I have Blepharitis too. I didn't know it until after my lasik and I think that it has caused a lot of my problems. My oil glands are also clogged. I do warm compresses and lid scrubs to help with that. I've heard that it's slow going to get it under control.
Hello Goba, I read your post about a month ago regarding corneal erosion. I had the same thing, very severe infact. I ended up seeing a specialist eye doc in Nampa, Idaho by the name of Jorge Martinez. He said that he has successfully treated this issue before. What he did was he prescribed eye drops for me called Lotemax. These are used for patients recovering from eye surgeries. I was dosed at 3 drops a day for 2 months and then 1 drop a day for 6 weeks. I had doc visits every month and each visit he told me that the erosion was healing more and more. It si a lengthy process. Additionnally he told me to ge aome Bausch and Lomd Muro 128 5% eye ointment and to put in about 1/8 inch or less every night before bed. My last visit too him was in january and thngs have been very good since then. I did have one minor inccident about 6 weeks ago but I think that was because I put the ointment in too early before going to bed.

Hi Mike, Thanks for you input. I actually haven't had an erosion since April 28th. Thank goodness. But, I did develop an allergy to the Muro 128. That was not so good. I had very sore eyes. Well, I also have dry eyes because of Lasik. So, I just found some new drops that I am trying. I started using refresh pm, but now I am using a drop. It is the pits, what caused yours. Glad you are better. Take care. Goba
Hi, I just wanted to let hating glasses know that I only went without ointment for 4 nights. I did switch to a drop called Dwelle that is doing well for me so far. I also switched to the drop called nutatear. So far I have used them for about 6 days. I like them so far we will see. I just keep hoping that things continue to improve. I am almost 6 months post lasik. I hear things continue to improve for quite awhile, and my prescription was pretty bad. I just don't want to be sorry that I did this. Oh I also developed blepharitis, I personally think that it has to be from some of the ointments clogging things, but I'm not a doctor. So, I'm doing better than two months ago, my doctor said that I seem to get better in two month intervals. Anyway, just wanted to let you know. Hope you are doing well. Goba
Sorry to hear about the Bleph. It seems to be a common problem that no one seems to know they have until they have issues post-lasik. I think that maybe doctors should start testing for it as a regular part of their eye tests. Particularly Lasik doctors since, Bleph seems to get exacerbated after the surgery is done. I have not been diagnosed with Bleph and, I hope that I never am. I hope you continue to improve and that you have found the perfect drop for you. I am still searching. The Visine Pure Tears is still good but, not as great as I first thought. I am almost a year and a half post-op and am still improving. I saw a minor improvement a couple weeks ago. I guess you could say I noticed it. My biggest problem seems to be related to my office environment as my eyes seem nearly perfect on the weekends. I can't even begin to figure out what it is in this office that bothers me so much. It could be the heating and cooling since, my biggest problem is in my left eye and the vent is on the ceiling over my left shoulder. But, who knows. I closed that vent so, it shouldn't be a problem anymore. So, I guess I give up and just have to put up with it. Which stinks since I spend 9 hours a day, 5 days a week at work. Oh well!
I hope you continue to improve! Thank you for the update! Keep in touch and take care!
