Farsighted + astigmatism

Anyone who is/was farsighted with astigmatism have successful correction? Is it even possible? I'm a +4.00/+4.25 and my astigmatism is like -1.00. I have been wearing Toric contacts for about 5 years, but they don't correct well enough. I have a lot of problems with them turning the wrong way. I am wearing my glasses more and more over my contacts. Every year I ask my optometrist about correction and she says to wait longer for the technology to get better. I'm tired of waiting. I teach deaf kids and really rely on my sight.

Go to an Opthamologist who specializes in Lasik instead of listening to an Optometrist. Glasses and contacts is how he makes his living. Of course he is going to tell you to wait.

Re: Farsighted + astigmatism

I was +3.75 and +5.25 with astigmatism in the right eye. Had Lasik almost 2 months ago and am generally happy with it. One thing I want you to clearly understand is that the laser treatment for farsighted people differs from that for nearsighted people and therefore, the recovery time is a lot longer. I am told that I have to be on this rollercoaster of fluctuating eye sight for
about 3-4 months. It isn't anything intolerable, but can be ennerving if you don't know what to expect. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and can work on the PC all day without even using glasses, other times I can't even see clearly with glasses ( I bought the +1 magnifiers at the Dollar store). I'm at the point where I really wish it would settle down already, because sometimes I'm even afraid to open my eyes in the morning, fearing that it may be a bad day. You will still need reading glasses either right away or eventually. Having said that, I'm now having more good days than bad days, and I expect to fully heal and have stable vision in about 6-8 more weeks. I'm ecstatic that I can do everything but read very small print now without glasses (for the most part), but fully expect having to wear reading glasses eventually. If you decide to have the treatment, don't get discouraged by all the "instant success" stories you read on here, as 95% of all people who undergo Lasik are nearsighted. You'll instantly see much better than before without glasses or contacts, but you will have a longer healing period with major fluctuations in your vision.

Re: Farsighted + astigmatism

Good to hear from someone who has had it done. I've done some research and realize that it is a different procedure. It's something that I will definitely take my time in deciding. My brother is at the same point as me. Even now trying to read the print on this message is difficult. With all the fluctuations in vision during recovery, I would have to choose wisely the time to have it done so that it did not interfere with my job. Thanks for the info. I greatly appreciate it.

Re: Farsighted + astigmatism

I had Hyperopic or farsighted LASIK 28 Apr 07. My pre-LASIK RX was OD +5.25 - 1.25 X 031; OS +5.25 - 1.75 X 145 (Bifocals +2.00). I have worn glasses since I was 7 yrs old. With-out my glasses everything was just a blur. The Dr. used the Alcon LADAR system. My treatment was standard and not custom due to my RX being outside the FDA approved range for custom treatment.
My current vision is 20/20 in my right eye and 20/30 in my left. I've been lucky and have not fluctuated much. I have had mild dry eye problems but those are getting better. I also use the +1.00 reading glasses for small print. I have no problems with working on the computer or other normal activities. My eyes are still healing and will be for the next several months but so far I am extremely pleased.
