Choosing a Doc

So I got a recommendation from an eye doctor (who doesn't do Lasik) to a well-respected opthalmologist in my town. This opthalmologist had training at Emory in corneal surgery and has been doing Lasik 8 years. However, he does a lot of routine stuff & other surgeries. He's done 300 Lasik surgeries in 8 years, about 1 per week. I read somewhere that the surgeon should have done 500 total and about 250 in the last year. My surgeon hasn't-but is very well respected. It's not one of those Lasik centers, it's an eye practice. Supposedly the best eye practice in my city.

Does this sound adequate? He seems very professional and cautious, is even making me redo some of the scans after no wearing contacts for 2 weeks.

Thanks for any advice!

I would advise against this doctor. My suggestion is to go with an experienced surgeon, and from everything I have read, an experienced surgeon will have done thousands of surgeries with good results. The eye doctor who did my eyes has done over 10,000 surgeries. He does them one day a week and that's all he does on that day. I don't think 500 surgeries is enough where I would feel confident in his ability.

Re: Choosing a Doc

I agree, find a doc who did the most surgeries in your town. I believe mind had the most of all doctors in Hawaii, like 8000 and that was six years ago. Pay the price because your eyes are precious

Re: Choosing a Doc

Is it better to go to a Lasik Center or an opthamologist who does a broader spectrum of things? I assumed an optha would be more well-rounded and could address any complications. But I did wonder about only having done 300 surgeries in 8 years (that's ~1 per week). So, Lasik Center or eye practice??

I would go to an Opthamologist who is also an experienced Lasik Surgeon. I wouldn't go to any discount Laser Centers period, or any opthamologist who has done fewer than a couple thousand surgeries.
