Considering Lasik, Thoughts?

Hi Everyone-

I am considering Lasik (I have an appointment for my evaluation scheduled for next week). Please provide your thoughts. I have read a lot of Negative / Positive feedback (more positive prior to visiting this site which is making me nervous now about getting it done). My prescription is fairly high ( -8.00 in both eyes, w/ a Astigmatism in my Right eye, and very little in my Left) – which has me wondering if I should even bother I know they can’t correct 100%.
How safe is it, are there any long term side effects that anyone is aware of? I did read that no one has ever become blind, which is one of my main concerns.
I already experience dry eye; I work on a computer all day long so my eyes become extremely dry during the day. By 5 p.m. I just want to get home and remove my contacts b/c of the fatigue / dry eye I feel when wearing them. I am just tired of my contact / glasses. I have been wearing glasses since I was 6 years old and kind of fed up. With my Astigmatism in my right eye I can never see “perfect,” unless I switch back to Gas permeable which is not in the books (too uncomfortable).
I have always considered Lasik, but never could afford it until now.
Thanks in Advance!
Jennifer =)

Re: Considering Lasik, Thoughts?

Jen , I'm sure you've read good and bad posts. I'm gonna give you the bad side. I was -8.75 in both eyes with astigmatism more so in the left eye. Like you, I had the money and was really struggling with contacts too. Dry eyes and the irritation. So on 10-23-10 I gave it a shot. My o.d. did all the testing prior to the surgery. I was of course a great candidate. I never met the actual person doing my surgery till the day off. Surgery was uncomfortable. Smell of flesh burning was disconcerting to say the least. Afterwards the doc had to lift the flap to clean out after seeing " debris" underneath. Sat there for about 25 minutes then sent on my way.

Went home , slept and woke up a few hours later. Vision was better in one eye as opposed to the other. The eye with the higher amount of astigmatism was obviously worse. Now it wasn't until I looked outside the next night and realized I was screwed. The halos and starbursts along with just the overall fizziness around any light source was alarming. That's when I knew this was not good and took to the net to search this. I didn't do one bit of research prior to this. That was a huge regret!

So for about 3 nights I didn't sleep. Pouring all kinds of crap in my eye that they had given me. I called the office for a visit with the actual " surgeon". The answers I got from him about all my issues is the standard " give it time". Then fed me more drops to pour into my eyes. I knew time wasn't gonna heal my issues from numerous visits to other eye doctors and specialists.

Fast forward to present time. Coming up on 2 years. Not one thing has changed from that day of getting LASIK. I have dry eyes, halos, starbursts , which some times cover an entire oncoming car. Usually at dusk. Any light source has halos surrounding them. The starbursts are even evident in day time. Vision is usually fuzzy. I've tried glasses to help with these issues to no avail.
Good luck with your decision. There are good outcomes on this message board as well.

Re: Considering Lasik, Thoughts?

I also was neg 9 age 6 ,had lasix from a friend was overcorrected..now at 73 i am almost 2025 . iI finally had two cataracts removed which I should have done and not the lasix.IF YOU ARE OVER 45 DONT DO IT...YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO READ UP CLOSE AND THREAD A NEEDLE OR ANYTHING CLOSE...ALSO MY FLOATED BECAME VERY BIG AND ARE STILL THERE. THEY DRIVE YOU CRAZY. YOU MAY HAVE MORE DRY EYES. A MAYO CLINIC DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT YOUR EYES ARE TO PRECIOUS TO HAVE THIS DONE..I DID IT ANYWAY , WISH I HAD MY OLD EYES BACK AND THE LAST THOUGH IS THAT WHEN YOU DO HAVE TO HAVE CATARACTS OUT. THEY HAVE TROUBLE MAKING THE CORRECTION. AND THE ASTIGMATISH IS HARD TO CORRECT.I HAD IT ALSO IN RIGHT EYE GOOD LUCK

Re: Considering Lasik, Thoughts?

Hi,

I had LASIK Wavefront in May this year so its has now been 5 months. Would i recommend it? Probably not as there are too many risks in my opinon. I had a very high prescription -10 in one eye and -9.25 in the other with some astigmatism. The out come:
On the plus side my vision is good and i no longer need glasses to drive etc. However the downside is that i have very dry eyes which has only inproved marginally in the five months (never had dry eyes prior to op) I also have starburts and halos - to start with - both in the day and night, now its only an issue at night but manageable.
Do i regret it? At the moment i would have to say yes because of the dryness which is very debilitating but i can't turn the clock back. So as you have dryness already i would be very wary of preceeding with the treatment. In my case, i wish i had kept the glasses and my money in the bank.
The other issue to consider, depending on your age, is the effect it can have on your near vision, i now need reading glasses which i did not need before.

Good luck what ever you decide.

Meville
