My 83 year old father, who is usually mistaken for someone in their mid-60s, is currently in the hospital. His only symptom is fatigue, which has increased slowly over the past several months. According to his doctor, his bone marrow is failing to produce sufficient blood. He has been as low as 6. With blood unit transfusions he has gotten as high as 9.2. He has received 5 units within the past 5 days. He has been receiving B12 treatments for 2 weeks (in addition to a few blood transfusions), but his doctors said that is merely a side problem. They have taken a bone marrow sample to run tests to determine the ultimate problem, including the possibility of leukemia, but the results could be days away. My grandmother died of leukemia, so it is in our family health history. Our confusion is that except for the fatigue, he currently shows no signs of the major bone marrow diseases. We'd appreciate any thoughts on possibilities, especially suggestions of research sources on the net.
Thanks!
