My mom found out in May of 07 she had AML. Just in the beginning of April she was at the doc for her yearly check up and everything was fine with all her blood work. But early May she got a cold she just couldn't kick so she decided to go to the doc for some medicine as she was getting ready to go to the doc she noticed a large bruise on her stomach. When she went to the doc for her cold she mad mention of it to him. He didn't like the looks of it sent her to the hospital and ran blood work and all her numbers from just a month ago were in half.
After doing a bone marrow biopsy we found out is was AML her blast were 25%
Of course treatment was start right away and the docs are extremely hopeful because it was really caught SOO early.
She handled her chemo well aside from the hair loss and being weak.
They did a bone marrow transplant in Nov of 07. Her sister was a 100% match!!!!!!!!!!!
She was in the hospital for about 4 weeks.
Now this my concern....
After the transplant she seems so much worse than she did when taking the chemo. She is on soooooo much medicine it blows my mind. It has made her so weak and she can't even walk and now relays on a wheelchair. She can't even make it to the restroom. They docs all say it's just the meds and once she slowly comes off of them she will start to feel stronger again and get her energy back.
I know getting atransplant is a huge deal I just didn't think it would take such a told on her as it doing.
Does anyone know anything about this? From past experiences?
I should also add up until having AML my mom has been very healthly and is only 57.
