New - Labs - Dr asked if Leukemia in family hx

Hello Everyone,

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not.. but I'm going a little nuts here.
I haven't been feeling well for a really long time... Mostly tired, light-headed, itchy dry skin, and other thyroid like symptoms off and on.. but my thyroid always comes back within normal limits. The last two CBC's I had done, has my Dr. questioning whether I have leukemia or not so she has referred me to a hematologist... even though my blood levels are not way off.. they have been off for a very long time. I'm not seeing the hematologist until July 1st and that is way too much time for me to think.. I'm the type of person that not knowing is worse than knowing. I'm going to type out my labs and hopefully one of you nice people can help me make sense of this. I would really appreciate any advice or opinion. Really needing to talk to someone right now.. Doing searches on the internet is just so confusing. Like I said I'm going nuts.. lol Plus the last few days I have been soooo tired, nausea, and light-headed to the point where I feel like I may pass out.

Opinions are fully appreicated..

Thank you :-)

Re: New - Labs - Dr asked if Leukemia in family hx

HI! That is to long to wait. I would go to the emergency room. I january I though I had a cold after my doctor sent me for cnc tests and my counts were high. He told me to go to the er. Within 2 hours they were able to tell me I had AML Leukemia. Since than I have had 4 rounds of chem and it is in remissin. So don`t waste anymore time and get to the ER.

Re: New - Labs - Dr asked if Leukemia in family hx

Thank you for your response...

I guess they aren't "That concerned" because my levels aren't way off. The hematologist went over my labs and said they wanted to see me but, it's not an emergency so they said the first appointment they could give me is July 1st.

If I went to the ER, what ever PA they would give me to see would only tell me to see my PCP. I would just be going around in circles... it's sad but true.

Re: New - Labs - Dr asked if Leukemia in family hx

I think they're not very concerned yet because you don't have signs of an acute leukemia. If you end up with a chronic one, sometimes they just monitor it anyway, since people live many years with them. Since your counts have some abnormalities, I'd get another CBC in June just to see where you're at. Then I'm sure they'll do one at your appointment in July. There are disorders that cause abnormal blood counts besides leukemias, too, so I wouldn't worry until you have a reason to worry.

By the way, what did they say about your very low vitamin D?? Did they want you to start supplements? My guess is they're recommending at least 2000 IU/day? I hope that was addressed!

Re: New - Labs - Dr asked if Leukemia in family hx

With leukemia, the cancerous white cells end up crowding out the red blood cells (RBC) and platelets. That's why leuekemia patients can look a bit pale and lack energy thanks to a low RBC count, and bruise easily thanks to a low platelet count. Considering that your platelet count is normal to high, and that your RBC count is in the normal to just under normal range, I wouldn't think you should be worried about leukemia.
