Re: why is my doctor recommending a bone marrow biopsy

Hi and thanks for replying, I am still nervous about it, when he said it was up to me to have it done....im thinking well maybe it not that serious and I could just pass on it.....just watch the wbc for a while. the ups and downs have been going on since august of 2007. and another question, can you feel lymph nodes in their normal state, when they are not swollen? thanks

don't worry you should check out a low wbc coun, it could be a virus or something.
a bone marrow biposy, would rule out anything, also you get so much information
from it, the procedure can be a little painful, but ask for something before hand, and
it will not be bad, you will just be sore in your hip for a few days that's all.

Re: why is my doctor recommending a bone marrow biopsy

they can tell alot from a bone marrow biospy, more than just blood work. I have had 2 and was knocked out for one and the other was awake cause my blood pressure dropped and i wont lie to you, i cried the whole time. So ask for the 'twilight' its what they use for colonoscopies. i have since got a new dr, a very good specialist. i swear the other one was trying to kill me, he wasnt educated enough for cml and my new one is. i was diagnosed in march of 2009 and i feel like i wasted a year with him. write to me if you have any questions. dee145

Re: why is my doctor recommending a bone marrow biopsy

The hematologist I am seeing is also recommending a bone biopsy and aspiration as my wbc's and rbc's have been oscillating for a few months now. I am curious to know what symptoms you had that led to your diagnosis. I am feeling very nervous as I have been very susceptible to infections since I have had the low wbc count. This may sound odd, but I feel like my body is constantly fighting against some kind of bacteria or virus. I have low grade fevers, a general feeling of malaise and can't do the things I used because I know I will pay the price the next day with fever and flu-like symptoms. I have been postponing the biopsy for fear that such an invasive procedure could trigger an infection.
I look forward to your response.

My WBC's have also been fluctuating for the past few months:
4300
3500
3600
4300
3300
The hematologist I am seeing is also recommending that I get a bone biopsy with aspiration, but I have been very hesitant that I even cancelled the first appointment I had. Now, I somewhat leaning towards it, but still feeling very nervous about it. One of the reasons I am building a tiny bit of fortitude is because I am tired of constantly feeling an overall general feeling of malaise not knowing what the cause might be. I have been able to keep a marginal level of health only because I stay indoors most of the time and only go out for the basics. When I do, I try to go out during off peak times so that I avoid crowds. Have you decided on moving forward with procedure? When and if I go through with it, I will be sure to post my experience. I look forward to your response.

Re: why is my doctor recommending a bone marrow biopsy

My husband had the bone marrow biopsy right in the cancer doctor's office. It is a little painful but goes away. This test tells the doctor if the cancer is in the bone marrow and can tell what kind of treatment they can begin with. I recommend getting it. It is a positive test for identifying what type of cancer.

Re: why is my doctor recommending a bone marrow biopsy

The bone marrow biopsy procedure I had did not feel like much more than a pin stick. They gave me two small doses of fentanil that prevented all of the pain and I was awake and talking (actually jabbering away with the staff) throughout. I would not hesitate to have it done again if the doctor ordered it.
