Low white blood cell count and immature cells

My husbands blood test are abnormal. He went in because he had a flu that wasn't getting better. No fever but aches, cough, sore throught etc....the dr took blood and advised his white blood cell count was very low and he needed to take another test. He did and the dr called him and said they found a very low white blood cell count and also and immature cells and he needs to go to the hospital tomorrow for more blood work. He has had flu like symptoms on and off for weeks. Could it be leukemia? I'm freaking out.
I am not finding any other info on immature blood cells except for Leukemia.
