high fever after transplant

any have experience with fevers after stem cell transplant? my father had his transplant a week ago and this morning woke up with a fever of 38.5 which has since gone up to 39.5 degC

just wondering how normal fevers are after a transplant and especially this high.... does this mean infection??

Hi there,
I hope everything worked out for you. But yes, if the transplant was only a week ago, then chances are, your father's immune system is knocked out. He is likely neutropenic. If he has a fever of 38.5C or higher, he should contact his MD immediately or go to the ER.

Re: high fever after transplant

Hi there,

Thank you for the response.

He had the fever for about a week, followed by some bad Gut and Intestinal GVHD. He got out of the hospital about 8 days ago and at the moment seems pretty much normal, just tired. No more fever or diarrhea.... all his blood counts have returned to normal. We are just waiting for the results of a bone marrow test done last wednesday.
