Very High ALT & AST Levels

My liver ALT/SGPT & AST/SGOT levels are very high and I was just released from the hospital and doctors still aren't too sure why they are this high which is leaving me very uneasy. Enzyme levels were ALT/SGPT 821 IU/L & AST/SGOT 1,063 IU/L. All Hepatitis tests came back negative. Gallbladder previously removed, duct was enlarged but no stone seen on ultrasound or CT. Right now they are not allowing me to take any tylenol products which includes my migraine medication (Fioricet) because of the levels that were in my system. I am not a drinker at all due to fighting migraines (I was asked this a million times in the ER). Running other blood work that will not be back for a couple of weeks. Very nervous. Any light anyone can shed would be greatly appreciated. 37 year old female. 3 kids, married for 14 years work full time very active life style.

Re: Very High ALT & AST Levels

Liver enzymes in the ranges you have are not too ominous (short term) provided you can find the cause and fix it. For perspective, Hepatitis A can result in enzyme levels 10X what you're seeing and most recover from this without substantial damage.

Regarding your Fioricet, my girlfriend has had migraines for years and recently discovered SOMA (carisoprodol) works remarkably well. It (soma) is in a similar class to your Fioricet, but contains no acetaminophen. You might ask your doc about this and see if you can used this as a bridge med until you get to the bottom of whatever is going on.

Best of Luck, & hope you get some reassuring news soon.

Re: Very High ALT & AST Levels

Thank you so much! I see my neuro tomorrow so I will ask him about this. That is a huge relief to know that this elevation isn't the end of the world. They have had me terrified. My numbers have slowly started to come down but at this rate it's going to take months and no one knows the cause yet. Thank you again!

Re: Very High ALT & AST Levels

I'm going through the exact same thing right now. I went to the hospital for what I suspected was the flu and ended being admitted for my liver enzymes (AST: 1,118 ALT:697). I'm otherwise a healthy 24 yo non-drinker. They actually did a drug test on me to check acetophetomin levels which came back normal, also no hepatitis, or cirrhosis. I've been worried just like you, and I've also developed sudden diabetes. I'm wondering if this happened to you as well? They found sugar and ketones(150mg), as well as protien and blood in my urine. I've developed hand tremors, swollen ankles/ abdomen, and unusual weight gain. I feel uneasy and can't help but feel a disease process is taking place, but feel reassured after reading your post that maybe it's just temporary and will fix itself. Are you having any new high blood sugar or having any swelling?
I'm waiting for more blood tests too.
