Abnormal Liver Function Test

I had various bloods taken last week as I have been diagnosed with health anxiety and so the Doctor was trying to rule stuff out and put me at ease. I called the GP today to check if my results were back and was told that they all say "no further action required" except for the liver function one which has now sent me into panic mode. She tried to put me at ease by saying that it didn't state "urgent" or anything next to me name and that if it was life threatening they would have rang and made me an appointment straight away. They haven't in fact contacted me at all about the results yet until I called them today. Does anybody have experience of this? Could it just be something simple which has caused it to be abnormal? Would I know if there was something seriously wrong with my liver? I'm driving myself insane and it doesn't help I have health anxiety.

Re: Abnormal Liver Function Test

Hi KW, & mild to moderate elevations in liver enzymes are actually quite common. A lot of pharmaceuticals can cause this, as well as over the counter pain meds, environmental & workplace toxins, etc.

Doctors usually don't get too excited about this unless and until enzymes are double the upper limit over 2 or more tests done several months (typically 90 days) apart.

For perspective, viral hepatitis A can pop enzymes up into the thousands for a month or more, and these patients usually recover without permanent damage being done.

This said, you don't want to go on for extended periods of time with enzymes out of normal range, so this is something you'll want to follow-up on and get resolved.

If your enzymes aren't alarmingly high (over double the upper normal limit) time is on your side, & the next step is typically to re-test at 90 days and see if this has resolved. In the mean time, you might want to start looking at medications and other factors that might be causing this.

The "Livertox Database" has a search feature that might be helpful with this.

If enzymes are over double normal, a trip back to the doc for secondary diagnostics like ultrasound might be in order.

Hope you get to the bottom of this soon!
