Liver Biopsy

I have had a high ALT and AST (usually between 100 and 200) and my alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is at 13 ng/ML. I am a drinker and and gradually cutting down until I will not drink at all. I have also had an ultrasound showing fatty infiltration. My GI doctor wants to do a liver biopsy. I am a bit leary about a needle being stuck into my liver. My other option is once off the booze completely, wait about 4-6 weeks and have the ALT, AST and AFP checked again to see if it was the booze that caused the high numbers. Has anyone else been in this situation?

Re: Liver Biopsy

Hello,
My numbers are high also. I go tomorrow for an ultrasound. Don't know what to expect. I do know that alchohol can and does have an effect on the numbers. I would suggest you to definately cut back. It will help!!!! I read that the liver is the most important part of your body. Hence "LIVE" in liver>>ha I never looked at it that way.
********Take care of yourself!!!!***** Drinking isn't worth having bad health. If you can't stop then at least try to cut back. Melinda

Melinda, Thank you for your reply. I would really like to hear from someone who has had a biopsy to hear what an ordeal it was to go through.

Re: Liver Biopsy

I can tell you all about biopsy's. first the dr. numbs the area and inserts a long needle into your liver and removes a sample. then you lay on your right side for 1-3 hrs. you have to lay very still, a move or jerk could mean big trouble. does it hurt? yes. especially if your liver is damaged. You have to have your right arm above your head during the procedure and sometimes your shoulder will cramp really bad, so ask for medication to be on hand to help with that in case it happens. You can bleed, requiring surgery, but that usually doesn't happen. I would make sure the doctor has done many of these biopsy's before, a liver specialist is best. the whole procedure takes maybe ten minutes, the rest of the time you lay around. you can get an infection afterward, but I've have 4 biopsy's and never any problem. If you're sick I would get a biopsy, they can tell a lot about the liver from this. I'm the biggest baby there is when it comes to medical procedures, liver biopsy is bad, but there are worse things, like dying. there is no prep work to do, you just need a day off from work, I'd go on a Friday.
Hope this helps
