What Anti Depressants Can ppl with liver problems take? PLEASE HELP - Liver & Pancreas Disorders Message Board

Hi. I have a high liver count and doctors said before I might have slight cirrhosis from another disease I have ( Cystic Fibrosis)
I have been depressed for a long time now and a therapist wants to put me on an anti depressant.. But on ALL of them I read that you have to be carefull when giving to people with liver problems which i think means WILL HURT YOUR LIVER IF YOU HAVE PROBS..
Anyone know any anti depressants that dont do this or anything I can take?
I want to feel better but not at the cost of my life...

Hello..Strange you posted this.I was about to post the same question in another thread.I have Hep C & am on an Anti-depressant-Paxil,Trazadone(for insomnia),Adderall(for ADHD)..I read that they all are bad for the liver-but since I have severe depression,social anxiety,OCD,I am scared to quit them.The treatment I am on for the HEP causes severe depression-which in my case cant progress b/c of my prior history w/ emotional problems.I too am wondering what medications I can take that dont harm the liver.Of course I dont want to do more damage to my liver,but I also dont want to relapse & live my life as a severly depressed Hermit..My next Dr's App I am going to ask about this.If I find out sooner than you,I will post what I learned.

If you are on meds that warn of liver damage, make sure your doctor periodically tests your liver functions. Almost all drugs warn of liver damage if taken for to long or if you take to much. I also have liver damage and all my meds have the same warnings. The big no no to ever take is tylenol.

hi my name's andrea i'm 21 now and in brief when i was 16 months i was diagnosed with cirrohsis (however u spell it) of the liver, chronic active hepatitis (non a,b or c,) - it's auto-immune, and colitis. i was on the liver transplant list for a while, and at the age of 9 i had a colectomy. but anyways. at the moment i'm dealing with reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and i'm on lexapro for depression. ever since the colectomy my panels have been normal. so the lexapro hasn't affected me at all. it works really well. i'm on 20mgs a day. hope that helps a little.

Just make sure that the doctor checks your liver from time to time. I have Autoimmune hep and my liver is the affected organ. I do have cirrosis started and I have liver damage. I am also on 16 different meds daily. SO far my liver levels are OK. . If your doctor forgets, or doesn't check for a long time, ASK him to do so. It's a simple blood test, but an important one.
