Question Elevated liver enzyme levels

My liver enzyme levels have been elevated for over three and a half years. When I seen my primary doctor today he mentioned that they are still elevated. I have to go in on Friday for a CT scan and more bloodwork. My levels are ALK Phos 181, LDH 222, SGOT 170 and SGPT 137. They seem to stay in this higher range. I am to be tested for Hepatitis again. Every test done for this so far is negative. He is also talking about me having a liver biopsy. If anyone has had this done please let me know exactly how this is done. I have never done any type of drug usage and rarely drank.
Thanks.
Kim

Re: Elevated liver enzyme levels

I have had a liver biopsy and it really wasn't that big of a deal. I was scared to death before hand though. I was so nervous I almost did not go through with it. They gave me a valium about 30 minutes before the test.I also received what they call a twilight coctail. It is supposed to make you groggy, but not totally out of it(because they want you to hold your breath during the test). They then put me in the CT-Scan and took some pictures. They marked where to put the needle, pulled me out of the machine and inserted the needle. It felt strange, but didn't really hurt. They then grabbed a sample and then inserted some foam into the needle hole. It was nothing like I expected! A few days after the biopsy I had to return to the ER because I was in intense pain. Come to find out I had a small bleed from the incision, but they gave some meds and I was fine. Good luck to you!

Crisma. You said you have a fatty liver. What caused it, and what were your symptoms? I have had right-sided pain for years, but ALT,GGT levels normal - always, and ultrasounds come out normal. ???

Re: Elevated liver enzyme levels

I have a condition called chronic ideopathic pancreatitis. And I am on several medications for that. I am on oxycontin for pain, with ultram for breakthrough pain, plus creon to help me digest food, also prevacid for the indegestion, and also phenergan for nausea and vomiting. When they first noticed my liver enzymes were elevated I was told not to take anything with acetamicin ( not sure of spelling) and I haven't since. That is the main reason I was put on the oxycontin die to the fact there is none of that in it. For some reason since I turned 35 my health has declined quite rapidly. I have had my gallbladder removed, my pancreas started acting up, and just six months ago a growth was found on my left renal gland. I have no medical history since I was adopted so everything that has been happening seems real scary.
Sorry I am going on and on. It helps having someplace to write this all down.

Re: Elevated liver enzyme levels

Wimzie, I was diagnosed in April 04 with a fatty liver, liver cyst, and an enlarged liver. I do not know what caused the fatty liver. Every doctor I talk to seems to give a different answer. My GI said it is from me being overweight( I am about 50 lbs overweight), but I have other docs say that's not true. I don't know what to think. It all started about a year ago. I had bronchitis(sp?), and went to the doctor with what I thought was my ribs. She did too and gave me meds for cracked ribs. I went back a few months later and she was certain it was my gall bladder, so she sent me for a ultrasound. It came back ok, but they did find that my liver was enlarged. So I went for a CT-Scan, Hida-Scan, and finally an MRI. The MRI was aborted because the dye made me sick, but the MRI tech did show me what she thought was a cyst. So my doc sent me for a liver biopsy and it showed no cancer, but a severe to fatty liver. I am out of money, no insurance, so I am not able to find out more about the cyst. I have pain on the upper right side at all times. Sometimes it is really bad, but most of the time it is bearable. If I were you I would see if they will do a MRI. Good luck to you! Let us know how you are doing.

Re: Elevated liver enzyme levels

Kim, I forgot to mention that I also have a spot on my pancreas. They did a blood test for pancreatic cancer that came out negative, so my doc said that is probably a fat deposit from the fatty liver. I have tried to find out information about this but have not been able to. I think when you have problems with either the pancreas or liver, it seems to affect the other. I have never done drugs, and very seldom drink. I understand the health declining. Before this happened, I was seldom sick. Now someday's I have trouble doing basic housecleaning. It sure gets frustrating. This board has helped me out a lot too! Let me know how you are doing.

Re: Elevated liver enzyme levels

Have your Doctor check for Hemochromatosis which is a High Iron Disorder. This can cause elevated AST and ALT liver enzymes.
