How do I know if I have any type of liver disease or damage?

Hello all...

I had a very stressful job that led me on a path of poor nutrition and too much drinking.
I relocated back to my home state depressed, underweight and sickly-looking.

I have been eating better now that my appetite is back but for the longest time I seemed to have a gluten-intolerance.
I went to GNC and I have been taking enzyme caplets and liquid vitamin drink every day.
Still, I don't seem to be gaining that much weight back. I started exercising again but I still look skinny, especially around my ribcage.
My skin seems to "snap-back" when I pull it. Like I have no body fat at all.
I totally stopped drinking coffee, soda and eating crap like fast food and cookies.
I was 145lbs when I relocated to TX for the job and moved back to PA at a low 125. I am a 38 yr old male that stands about 5'6".
I have been to the doctor and I had my stool tested for parasites and a blod test for H.Polori. All negative.
Now I am getting tested for Arthritis because I have been having serious chills in my hands and feet at times. Like all the blood is sucked out leaving my hands all wrinkled. Really strange.
Any suggestions?
I did my share of partying in my days but I wasn't an alcoholic. Do you have to be an alcoholic to get liver damage?

Re: How do I know if I have any type of liver disease or damage?

if you think you have a liver problem, ask your doc to run a liver panel... its a very inexpensive lab test... they also can feel your liver and know if there is any enlargement... the important thing is that none of us can answer this question, only a good doctor and some lab tests can! good luck and good health

by the way, not all vitamins process well in the liver if you have liver disease... dont try to self treat, find out if you have a problem and then let the professionals help!

Re: How do I know if I have any type of liver disease or damage?

I am getting checked for Rheumatory Arthritis (my brother has that) and I am having my blood checked for and deficiencies. The first blood test I had in Dallas I was checked for any thyroid disease. My iron and sugars fell within range.
I am scared though. I definitley want to have my liver checked. I never considered myslef a hard drinker but maybe everything finally caught up with me. Is it too late to repair your liver if you have liver disease> WHat about liver cancer? By the way...I don't smoke. I think in my life I maybe had 30 cigarettes and I would never inhale that deep anyway. Maybe a few cigars.

Re: How do I know if I have any type of liver disease or damage?

there are lab tests that tell you whether you have a liver problem. i listed some of those under another post. those tests are billirubin, alts, asts, alk phos, ama and ana tests... there are others but one of these will come up abnormal if there is a problem most likely. if the problem is quite serious you will have other problems, kidney problems, bleeding varices, enlarged spleen and liver, which, believe me, you will know you have..... the important thing is to have the lab tests drawn... dont worry until you have to.

I'm getting my results mailed to me this week. The receptionist already told me that my liver is healthy. I just don't understand what the hell is wrong with me. I am definitely switching to a specialist.

by the way, you do not have to drink or do drugs to have liver disease. i work with women all over the country who were born with genetic disorders that did not appear until they were adults. this disorder, and others like them, will also cause end stage cirrhosis..... no alcohol, drugs or sex needed! lol

Hey Wolfman - Your problems dont sound like liver problems..... So how much do you weigh now and what kinds of things do you eat during the day ?????? Do you take any vitamins or supplements ????

Re: How do I know if I have any type of liver disease or damage?

Well, I weigh about 122-127 lbs.at different times of the week. It's strange. My weight seems to change. Before my move to Texas I weighed 145lbs. I'll skip the long story that brought me back to PA, underweight, depressed and gluten-intolerant. I was a mess when I came back here. I wasn't eating right in Texas and I was under a lot of anxiety and stress with a new job. I quit the job and moved home. I have had my thyroid tested, my stool checked for parasites, and I just recently had a comprehensive metabolic panel done. I got a copy of it here, but I don't understand how to read it. There's an "in-range" column and an "out-of-range" column. The only thing I am out of range on is Bilirubin..whatever that is. I'll need to go over this with my doc. As far as vitamins go, I went to GNC and the manager there suggested I take a liquid vitamin solution every morning and two enzyme capsules before each meal. Remarkably, the enzymes have been helping. He told me it would take about 21 days for my body to re-adjust to eating. Maybe my metabolism changed. WHat I don't understand is that I don't drink that much anymore (maybe 1-2 beers a week) and I have been eating big portions. A lot of fish, potatoes, broccoli, and I even have been drinking lactaid milk or 2% at times with granola cereal. Now I did try and eat a cup of chocolate and vanilla pudding last night and that did bother me. Loud burping. I have subscribed to boards on this site pertaining to Gluten intolerance or digestion. I guess I was concerned about my liver too, which led me to post on here. I know I shouldn't self-diagnose...but I have no medical benefits so I thought asking as many people on here about symptoms they've had or have...might shed some light on my problems.

What was the bili level on that test?A high bili can be a strong indicator of liver damage.Marcia

Re: How do I know if I have any type of liver disease or damage?

If I am reading it correctly....the "bilirubin" is 1.6 H. The range is 0.2-1.5 MG/DL
Is that bad?

Hey Wolfman - Your Bilirubin is BARELY out of range, and all these tests have a "tolerance" so you could actually be within the "normal" range. It still dosent sound like liver problems. Have you had a CBC - a "complete blood count" ????
Sounds like you are on a fairly lowfat diet. Is it your weight you are concerned about or your appetite ????
Hang in there.

Re: How do I know if I have any type of liver disease or damage?

Nah, I think my appetite is fine. I get hungry, but I do think I have celiac disease. I used to have really bad bloating eating just the smallest amount of food. I was popping PPI's for my reflux left and right. So much so, I was having bad reactions to those too. Bloodshot glazed eyes and my stool was coming out black. I quit taking all those pepcids and prilosecs about a month ago and all those symptoms stopped.
Maybe I have an ulcer?
