Unhappy Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

Hi, I have been having bad headaches for the last month, now the Dr tells me it's ok to take two tylenol twice a day for the pain, which I've been doing for the last couple weeks now. First they thought it was from my eyes, nope, so now I don't go back to Dr till the 30th, I don't want to take Tylenol everyday but don't know what else to do. I'm 64 and my enzines were slitly elevated, but he said it would be ok to take them. Help
TIA

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

Hi Green Eyed Granny--
Acet/Tylenol is usually safe to take as long as you don't exceed the recommended dose...even if your enzymes are elevated. That product alone will can elevate you #'s even in a healthy person.
My liver failed (had some unknown problems & added to them when I took too much acet while sick w/the flu over a short period of time...) but it regenerated itself--and now my normal range for liver enzymes is higher than most ppl's--but all 3 of my liver spec's told me I can still take acet...only the recommended dose.
It sounds like your dr has suggested this amt for you...do you have hep c and cirrhosis? Do you drink any alcohol?

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

Hi Gina,
yes I do have Cirrhosis, and Hep C, and inlarged Spleen,
I take Milk Thistle, and Inderal, don't watch my diet like I should, but usually feel pretty good.
Don't know what this jaw and headache is coming from, but It just might be my teeth,
I'm on Medicare and Medicaid, and they don't want to pay for dental, and mine are really bad.
Thanks for the reply...

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

Debbie222- you're right-they usually don't let you take it if your have cirrhosis...but it depends on your dr and your individual situation. I just meant even in healthy ppl it raised enzymes but that was safe...and it sounded like her dr told her it was ok to take it. I had two diff specialists tell me two different things a week apart-all based on the same enzyme numbers. I don't have cirrhosis or Hep, but had total liver failure. My liver regenerated itself. Two mos later one liver specialist told me I could take acet--and anything else as long as it was recommended dosage--if long term to get CBC every week for amonth after I d/c's it. The Transplant Med Director I still see said no alcohol, no acet, no ibuprofen for at least a yr. I ended up not needing the transplant, but was at the top of the list for a while until my liver began to regenerate itself. (Had there been a liver, I'd have had it.) I have to see the transplant ppl to make sure my #'s are good, etc, and if I do need one they can move me along quickly. So, it just depends on who you go to. I agree--ibuprofen is the best.

Green Eyed Granny---How did it go at the dr--did you wait until the 30th or did you go sooner?? How are you feeling? Any better? I hope so--headaches are horrible--and to have one that long is aweful--you just need one good pain-free day or night to break that cycle. Post when you can and let me know how you are....

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

there are different schools of thought on tylenol, follow your doctors orders. tylenol is thought to be safe for cirrhosis as long as it is not abused. sometimes the other stuff can be more dangerous. i know that is true in my personal case.

Unhappy Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

Hi all, now see, my dr said advil was worse than the tylonol.
At any rate I guess it doesnt matter now, I am now on Oxicodone for pain and had a CT Scan which showed a two inch mass in my sinusus pressing on my Pituitory Gland, so now I have to have some sort of surgery, (Just what I don't need.)
The Dr wants me to have it within the next two weeks.
Have a MRI and more Bloodwork Tuesday. I will keep you all informed. I am trusting God on this. Would appreciate all the Prayers I can get.
TIA

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

TIA- will be praying for you--for a good MRI and fast recovery on surgery. I'm sorry you have to have surgery--it's best they get that mass out asap. Altho you don't need this right now, do what your dr says. It's best you get that mass out asap. Take the oxy--hopefully that is helping you w/the pain. He's probably monitoringyou closely due to the hep/cirrhosis--I wouldn't worry abt the meds.

As for the acet vs ibuprofen--it just goes to show you each dr is different and each person's situation dictates their recovery process.

Stay strong, have faith in God, and know you're in my thoughts and prayers.
Keep me posted...

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

When you said oxycodone, what type of prep is it?Percocet, oxy IR or oxycontin?i am assuming it is not the percs as it still has tylenol but the contin and the IR do not.Hope all works out for you.marcia

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

I just looked on the bottle and it does say oxycodone 5mg tablets,so I guess it does still have Tylonol in it.
IMO you really have to watch every move these Doctors make, are you might end up worse than when you started.
I am also very leary of surgery too, In a way I feel like as old as I am, never had a surg in my life, and don't know if I should start now.

Re: Hep C and Cirrhosis, and taking Tylenol, need advice

Does it just say "oxycodone 5mgs",or does it say "oxycodone with apap 5mgs"?If it does not say APAP(which is the abbreviation for tylenol)then you have just plain oxy without the tylenol. If this prep does contain tylenol you can ask your doc for either Roxicodone or oxyIR(stands for Immediate Release),both have no tylenol.I take the IR as my breakthrough meds along with oxycontin for extreme pain from spinal cord damage.Marcia

I AGREE WITH DEBBIE.......my mom has hep c and cirrhosis , her docs actually more then one doc has told her to absolutly stay away from tylenol, so i would look to something else ,like advil, but i would take as little as i can, cirrhosis is so testy, its great that your taking milk thistle though that should help to rid your liver of meds and foods that r not very good for u....lol we all know its not easy to eat good...the healthy food is so exspensive... and the junk food is not !!go figure.... good luck and MAY GOD BLESS U and ALL that suffer from this horrible disease or knows someone that is.....may u defeat this nasty disease....GOD knows I WANT EVERY ONE WHO SUFFER'S FROM THIS INCLUDING MY MOM TO BE WELL AGIAN,oh before i forget sam-e is also good to help the liver,my mom was in hospIce dieing and i started giving her that and milk thisle and they kicked her out for not dieing basicly........ so thats something to think about.... k ask yur doc first though....
