My thin, fit, husband, who runs 40 miles a week, was found to have elevated liver enzymes during a physical 3 months ago. He rarely drinks, and has a normal cholesterol. The doctor was concerned and told him to have the blood tests redone in 3 months. He did that 3 weeks ago, and this time his liver enzymes were twice what they were 3 months ago, and now 3 liver enzymes were high, not just one. A heptatis screening was done which came out negative. The doctor suggested a cat scan, which he had done two weeks ago. All again was negative. The doctor suggested that he have blood work done again in 3 weeks, and if high, he would send him to a liver specialist. He said that there must be some illness causing his liver to fail. After reading some literature I found on the web about intense exercise and elevated liver enzymes, I was suspicious that this elevation could be caused by his running. Both times he had blood work done, he ran 13 miles the day before, and the second time the blood work was done, the weather conditions were very warm and very humid, stressing his body even more. I suggested to him that he convince the doctor to let him have blood work done again 5 days after the cat scan since he wouldn't be able to run for those days because of attending my daughter's swim meets. At first the doctor resisted, but then agreed. Well, we received the results today, and his liver enzymes, after 4 days of no running, were normal. The doctor said he is stumped but is humbled. I'm concerned because my husband runs a long 13 miler every Sunday, and if he is stressing his liver each time he does a long run, it will never have a chance to heal. I want him to see a liver specialist, but he is resisting. Of course, he won't stop running. I wonder if an exercise physiologist would be of any help? Marlene
