GGT over 2000, what does this mean?

My stepfather has been to the docs and have some tests done as he has been quite ill recently. He does drink a lot and the doc said he needs to cut down or he might only live 6 months. His GGT results was 2190, and as i understand it the normal is 60 or something? What does this mean? Can anyone please help me understand this and offer any advise to prevent his liver failing (is this what would happen?). Please reply ASAP as i am so worried. Thanks.Donna.x
