Unhappy cirrhosis of liver stage 6

My husband has just been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver stage 6. His doctor is on vacation. We were in shock at the time and forgot to ask. We really don't know how advanced his condition is at stage 6. How many more stages are there before a liver transplant is needed? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: cirrhosis of liver stage 6

First, (I'm not a doctor) but see if your doctor will have your husband referred to a hepatologist. (liver doctor) They specialize in just the liver. I haven't heard of "liver stage 6" First, when the liver becomes damaged, it's called hepatitis (inflamation of the liver), then if damage continues it becomes Fibrosis, then when the liver becomes so damaged and no longer functions normally it evolves into Cirhhosis. And from there can lead to Cancer or Hepatic failure. Please note that if the cause of the damage to the liver can be eliminated in the early stages (inflammation/fibrosis) then it is possible for the liver to heal itself.

Also, there are several causes of cirrhosis which can only be diagnosed with a biopsy. His liver enzymes may be elivated which may cause concern but not mean cirrhosis. What type of doctor did you see? How old is your husband? How many years drinking? These questions all play a role in recover and diagnosis.

Some of the symptoms of cirrhosis are, Jaundice, Fatigue, easy bruising, swelling in the abdomin or ankles, rapid weight loss and confusion.
If your husband is turning yellow and experiences any of these symptoms, take him to the emergency room. If he has an unexplained fever or flu like symptoms, take him to the emergency room. Complications of the liver can effect other organs such as the pancrease and kidneys.

In the meantime, while you are waiting for a Doc appt and referral to a specialist, take multivitamins. Especially thiamin and folic acid. Eat a low sodium and low protien diet. Drink coffee.(caf or decaf)(no sugar).

I hope this helps a little. Keep in touch,

MaC

Sutdies have shown that coffee can help protect indiduals from developing cirrhosis by up to 80%. Here's a link. (you may have to cut and paste into your browser)

Smile Re: cirrhosis of liver stage 6

Thank you for replying.

I am so sorry that it took me so long to return and check on the answer, but several members of the family have had their medical emergencies.

My husband had a liver biopsy and that is how he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver stage 6. The doctor said that stage 5 was high and that stage 6 was quite elevated. But we were in shock and forgot to ask him how many more stages are there before the need for a liver transplant is needed. He mentioned some treatments and said if it did not work and he got worse, then my husband would need to be on the list for a liver transplant.
