I've had elevated ALT and AST twice over the past two years, but they are normal today. However, now I have NO appetite. Can't finish a meal. Also I am extremely fatigued. Should I request sonogram? Did anyone have appetite loss as a symptom of liver disease?

Hi LindaMae.

I was diagnosed with having a fatty liver just over 3 months ago and one of the symptoms I got was definitely loss of appetite.

I also got upper right quadrant pain, nausea, dizzyness, chest pain, tummy pain, irregular bowel movements, discolouration of stools and urine, sleep disruption and depression.

Having a sick liver can do all sorts of horrible things to your body because it's function is so vital to so many other things in your body.

You should definitely have a chat to your doctor about this who should order both a sonogram and also blood tests to check your liver. Since you report that your ALT and ASTs are normal at the moment, it could also be related to gall bladder as well - but fatigue most often accompanies either diet or liver. Either way, a sonogram is a good first step to investigate any abnormalities.

There is also more to liver test than just elevated alt/ast. But other problems beside the live can cause loss of appetite and fatigue. It's best to see a doc and get checked out.
