PTT and liver biopsy
I was scheduled to have a liver biopsy yesterday. They drew my blood prior to the test and my PTT came back at >200, and the scale only goes to 200. The docs were freaking out. They repeated the test and it came back the same way. I do not and never have been on aspirin, heparin, coumadin or anything that would raise my PTT levels. So, after being there for 5 hours they refused to do the liver biopsy and sent me home.
Here's a little background. I have chronic pancreatitis. On a CT of the abdomen and Pelvis in October they discovered that I have a good bit of ascites (fluid) building up in my abdomen. Also they saw some fatty changes on my liver and said the liver is "dense". I have had numerous CT's over the last 3 years for my pancreatic problems, and this is the first time the liver changes were seen. I am 27 years old, non smoker, non drinker. My surgeon wanted the liver biopsy to rule out liver disease, b/c they are considering doing a total pancreatectomy with autologus islet cell transplant, and the liver needs to be able to take over some of the pancreatic functions. Has anyone had any experience with a high PTT without being on anticoagulants? Thanks for the info in advance!!
