Newly Diaganosed-Fatty liver

After having a biopsy I was told that I have moderately severe fatty liver. The gastro doctor told me that this can be reversed by treating the cause. My family doctor had guessed this is what was wrong and believes that it was a result of Cushing's disease which I am about to get sent to an endrocrinologist for. Along with my fatty liver I have ascities. Apparently mine isn't a severe case because I've read it gets so bad it has to be drained and such. Mine can get uncomfortable but hasn't reached unbearable by any means although I am on fluid pills to help control it.

I guess what I'm asking is if my ascities can ever be "fixed"....and can my fatty liver recover?

Thanks in advance

Re: Newly Diaganosed-Fatty liver

Hi there...

Is your fatty liver NASH (Non-Alcoholic SteatoHepatitis) or alcohol related?

If it is NASH, chances are that with diet and taking care of any underlying conditions (you mentioned Cushings) you should be able to reverse some of the effects and improve your liver enzymes. If cirrosis is present it will always be present, but with gentle care and management you should be able to improve your liver health so that the un-damaged parts can compensate nicely.

Good luck and please let us know how things go.

Re: Newly Diaganosed-Fatty liver

They said there was no evidence of cirrhosis. And all of my problems are non-alcohol related as I'm not a drinker. I have had drinks but not even on a weekly or even monthly basis. I probably have an average of 5 drinks a year for the past 10 years.

I'm really concerned about the ascities problem and the fact that I am having blood pressure problems as well. I had my gallbladder removed on April 25th and a week later I have blood pressure problems. It was weird.

I was diagnosed with NASH one month ago based on a biopsy that was done prior to gallbladder surgery in May. After my surgery my blood pressure went haywire but is now under control with medication. I don't drink, but am overweight. I'm not sure about the ascites...does your dr feel that the blood pressure elevation is due to the ascites? It's good to hear that there is no cirrhosis. Are you seeing a hepatologist or a general gastro dr? I see a general gastro man locally, and I'm seeing the head of the hepatology department at U of Miami on 8/21 to get the real story on what's happening with my liver.

Re: Newly Diaganosed-Fatty liver

No he hasn't given me any indication that he thinks that my high blood pressure is due to my ascites. I was sent to a general gastro that had me do the biopsy and then they pretty much sent my back to my family doctor after the biopsy. From what I've read it seems as though ascites is pretty serious and that worries me a lot. I've also been having a lot of swelling in my legs and feet. The past 2 days I've had heartburn and black stool after having no bm for 2 days. I'm so tired of being sick and feeling bad. I want to get better
