Question Biopsy results - ?????

I have just spoken with my Drs. office and been given the results of my liver biopsy. "non-supportive destructive colongitis/bridging fibrosis, stage 3". Does anyone know what this means?? The lab work that brought this on was as follows; my ALK PHOS was 1108 (range 35-104); ALT was 132 (range 0-31); and my AST was 105 (range 0-32). Also my ANA was 1:640 (normal 1:40). Would appreciate any information. (I posted on the Hepatitis board, also) Thanks. Geri

Re: Biopsy results - ?????

Tumbleweed,

I am not an expert so I could be all wet, but it SOUNDS most like Primary Sclerosing Colangitis...a very serious inflammatory condition which can cause the destruction of your bile ducts. It is often a complication of colon disease and it is thought that the colon disease senstitizes the liver to auto-immune attack.

Stage 3 is very very serious (Stage 4 is cirrhosis.)

Ask you doctor DIRECTLY if this is what he suspects.

The "Cure" is transplantation.

I hope my guess is wrong.

Me too, but thank you for your thoughts. I sorta knew that we were'nt "playing games" here I did have a temporary scare when I saw that Hep C and Bridging Fibrosis could be related. However my labs for Hep were all neg. My Dr. has been on vacation but hope to speak with him Monday.
Do you know if this can "sneak up" on a person? I had a biopsy last Sept. and it came back neg. I did not receive a copy of that lab work. Would it make a difference as to what area or angle that they did the biopsy? This one was in a completely different place. My GI Dr. told me that with my previous labs so high (whatever they were) that no way my first biopsy should have come back neg.
I am 65yrs young but if it comes to a transplant and there are young'ns waiting I will pass. (At least I feel that way now - ) I have had a pretty good life and I'm looking forward to going "home". -
Thank you so much for your help and l look forward to "hearing from you" again. Geri

Geri
You have a wonderful attitude. My hubby (age 54 at the time) had a transplant last September. He did great--couldn't have been a better match. However, the underlying cause was Hepc and that has returned so he is battling that with Interferon, one nasty drug, a lot like chemotherapy. If it does not work for him the Hepc will take his life in not a long time. He could have another transplant, but he said the same thing you did---he's ok with going home......let the young ones have their turn. Your words made me cry.
Bless you & good luck.
Liz

Liz -
Thank you so much for your note. I am so sorry that your husband is not doing as well as had been hoped. We know who is in control, tho', huh .
I see my Dr. tomorrow for the "prognosis". I called them today and they said that they could not tell me over the phone. My kids are just having hissies with the waiting and not knowing. I'll try to post tomorrow if things aren't too bad. You will be in my prayers.
Geri
