Liver Cyst Please Help!

hello my name is Joanne and I am new here
last week I went in for a check via ultrasound because I have thalassemia intermedia...I had a very bad feeling when the nurse left the room..came back in and redid my liver.
Anyways to make a long story short my hematologist says I have a cyst on my liver which looks benign but they want a follow up on a CT scan.

I have not eaten in over 2 days..I feel like I am losing my mind!
I am so scared that it might end up being liver cancer...my father died of Colon Cancer in Feb of this year.

A couple of things about me
I just turned 40 last month..I have cysts that come and go in my ovaries...
My last ultrasound was March 29 2007 and it was clear. I did have a colonoscopy Feb 2007 and all was clear .
I have not used birth control pills since 1990 when a benign breast lump was found and removed.

I have a 3 year old son and I am just beside myself..I am so scared that I am actually having suicidal thoughts!

Can they sort of tell from an ultrasound if it sort of looks benign or not?

I insisted on the CT scan as soon as possible so I will be going in next Thursday.
I am also having mild pain in my right side??? is this normal?

Thank you in advance
Joanne

Re: Liver Cyst Please Help!

Joanne,

I am 34 years old and used birth control pills off and on for 15 years. I went for a gall bladder sonogram and they found a lesion on my liver. I instantly like all woman on this board went into histerics that it was cancer. I thought I have to leave my children and only have a few months left. Then I had a ct scan and they still did not know what it was. Next I had a sulfur collied scan and finally an mri. Then I was referred from the gastrointerologist to a liver surgeon. They said rarely does cancer start in the liver it usually spreads to the liver. It could be three beign things. FNH which I am not very familiar with and hemangioma which is like a birth mark and usually left alone. My turned out to be an adenoma which can sometimes over several years turn to cancer or it can rupture and you can bleed out. So I had surgery 6 weeks ago and had 55% of my liver removed. I am healing fairly well and am almost normal. It was rough I will not lie but I made it. There is a board called FNH/Hemanigomas vrs Adenoma and started the original and is now up to thread 11. Is is a fanstastic board of ladies who had surgery or are waiting for surgery or they are just watching theirs. I now will need to get a scan every year to make sure nothing grows back and no more birth control. Ask anything you need I am happy to answer. My thoughts and prayers are with you. It will be okay and just please take it one step at a time. Sometimes they cannot truely know what it is until they remove it and send it to lab. They told me that they could remove it and then find out it was the kind that did not need removed. Mine was an adenoma as they thought and I think having someone who does liver surgery or best transplants is the best and they know what they see.

Re: Liver Cyst Please Help!

Joanne, please do not jump to the worst conclusion. Yes, they can tell to a certain degree the difference between benign and malignant.

And, it is pretty normal for the pain. Just take some deep breaths. Have they done blood tests? If not, that is in some ways a good sign because they did not feel it necessary. However, you may want to suggest that they do a liver panel. There is a tumor marker and if that comes back normal you may feel better about the whole thing.

Please talk to someone locally about how anxious you are.

Re: Liver Cyst Please Help!

Hello I went in last night for my CT SCAN...I have not received my results yet but from what my Dr said it looks like I have 2 lesions..one they think is a small cyst and the other one they were not able to diagnose from the Ultrasound so I am hoping they will from the Ct scan.

I had the dye used and I woke up this morning with my face swollen I looked like the elephant man! Honestly!

Anyways here is to everything being benign and I can get on with my life..

Hope everyone is well

Re: Liver Cyst Please Help!

Joanne,

When you had the CT, did it feel like you wet your pants when they started the dye? Nobody warned me about that one!

Please, stay calm about everything until you have more answers and a game plan. I have three hepatic adenomas that were discovered over a year ago, and I go back in October for a follow-up and to determine next steps. One of the adenomas ruptured, which is how they were discovered in me, and it was very painful. At first, when I went to the ER with severe right shoulder pain and right abdominal pain, the doctor thought it was my gallbladder. Then, when they did an ultrasound, they saw that there had been bleeding in my liver. My doctor asked me if I had any trauma in the past few days that could have caused it, but I told him no. The closest thing was when I was out for a run with the dog and he yanked hard on the leash, causing me to twist my body and trip. It was probably that motion, and my working out (in pain) for the next two days that caused the adenoma to rupture and bleed. I was very lucky that I did not bleed to death, as my specialist has informed me. For some reason, I did not freak out about any of this until I was faced with the possibility of surgery. My surgery was cancelled at the last minute, so now I'm doing the waiting game.

Most of the ladies on the FNH/Adenoma/Hemangioma board have had the surgery to remove their lesions, except ME! But now you have come along, so we can help keep each other calm while we wait. Save the date on your calendar, I go back for my follow-up CT on October 1, and meet with my hepatologist on October 13.

Re: Liver Cyst Please Help!

Joanne,

Yea, good news! You should definitely talk to your doctor about re-checks on them, especially since they weren't there on your last CT, which I think was about a year ago. Good luck and keep us posted if there are any changes.

Re: Liver Cyst Please Help!

When you go for your liver CT it will be painless. They will establish an IV. When they inject the contrast material you will feel like you are wetting yourself for about 5 seconds, than the feeling is gone, there is no pain. They may want to drain the cyst which is easily done while you are having the CT, this allows them to accurately insert the needle into the cyst, the pain, if any, will last about 5 seconds when they numb the area. They can send the material aspirated from the cyst to be analized to determine what it is. I had a very large cyst on my liver drained this way. 99% of all cysts are benign, so don't borrow trouble. It will most likely show cyst is from bacteria and put you on antibiotics. I spent 5 days in hospital getting IV antibiotics and than had 15 days of antibiotics at home that I had to take three times a day. If a cyst on the liver is not treated, it can lead to very severe consequences so have the CT done and follow up with your doctors. Liver cysts can be drained and treated and you will be pain free and back to normal in no time at all. I ignored mine for a long time because I was told it was in a spot that made it hard to drain. By the time I had something done it had gotten to the emergency level, was extreemely large, leaking, and had contaminated my abdominal and pelvic cavities. It would have been so much easier if I had it drained a long time ago.
