Urgent help needed: Bad metabolism problems, swollen liver, severe sleep deprevation

I am looking for help of any kind. Hi my name is Allan, about four years ago I had a knee surgery and when waking up I had a very difficult time coming out of anesthesia. It took me approximately 8 days to recover. The doctor said that he had heard of this and that I was not ridding of med's due to slow metabolism. I have had surgeries in the past and had no problems. Approximately a year later I started getting hoarse and having unknown (hypo) thyroid problems. During this time I started having problems taking vitamins, drinking tea, exercising, etc. Then my nightmare began...while at a routine dermatology checkup, my doctor noticed my thinning hair and told me to take propecia. The doctor said there would be no real risk and try it for 3 months (hair lose from unknown thyroid problem). how sad if I had only known...After taking my first dose I felt very weird in my head. I decided to try it again and stay on it for 21 days, during this time I started having severe nightmares, things were seeming unreal and scary. I finally realized it was the propecia causing my anxiety. I have never had an anxiety problem and told them there was something else wrong with me.
(Sorry for the long story just letting you know I was having metabolism problems that I was unaware of) The doctors put me on ativan and antidepressants, which none agree with me. I lost my sleep when stopping ativan and have not been able to recover since. Then I realized I was having liver problems. My liver has been swollen for 15 months, my ggt is always in the upper 200's or higher and my liver area hurts 24/7. I can't tolerate ANY med's at all. Every thing doctors try to give me to sleep I lose the feeling in my legs, arms and they feel extremely heavy. Every thing I take lowers my blood pressure making my heart pound 24/7 also my feet and hands turn yellow not from bilirubin, but from high carotene. To let you understand what I do on meds, I took a 7.5 mg Remeron under the lowest dose and with in 3 days I had no muscle control in my legs, and also felt very toxic. I have been to 4 liver specialists in the United States and none of them have know what to do with me. They all say I am not metabolizing or my liver function is very slow, but they don't know why. I've been hospitalized 4 times for sleep deprivation, 2 of the times at UT Southwestern. UT told me I was the most challenging patient they've had there in 20 years, due to lack of ability to take med's. I am currently waiting at Mayo, MN to see a liver doctor. I have any test results you can imagine if this would help anyone solve my problem. I feel like I don't have much longer to live, for my sleep deprivation is very severe. I currently take 30 mg of seroquil and 300 neruotin. I can only go about three days and i'm so sick that I have to stop my seroquil or else I get feeling so toxic that I can not function. I do not drink, smoke or do drugs;I never have.Im currently waiting on results of a cyp450 metabolism test. After a liver biopsy that I had last year, they said I had drug induced hepatitis. My ast and alt go up and down.At this time I can not sleep at all with out medicine and only sleep a few hours with it. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

I am so sorry. It has been a long journey precious brother. Your answers are coming. Only 17 hours until your doctor's appointment. Hang on. You are in good hands.

If anyone has words of encouragement they would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Urgent help needed: Bad metabolism problems, swollen liver, severe sleep deprevat

allen, first i really am sorry for what you have had to go thru and are still going thru right now. i am just wondering what your ammonia levels have been like? have they actually tested it? high ammonia can cause huge boughts of insommnia. my son had this problem while going thru liver failure. now he has it from depression but cannot take any of the normal SSRIs becasue of a horrid reaction he had to prozac. but he can stay awake aslong as three days at a time and just wont feel tired enough to actually just go to sleep. he is also on seroquel to try and help with this too.

my sons whole liver nightmare was actually treated at the U of MN here in MN back in 99-2000,they really DO have a great team of docs here if you can get there. i figured since you are trying to get to mayo, the U of MN is also a really great option. the transplant surgeon my son had was just amazing. Dr humar? great knowledgable guy, along with the other specialists that took care of him at the U. any teaching hospital is always a great option just because they do see the stranger more rare types of disorders there. its the type of place where people go when no one else can give them a proper Dx or you just run out of other options. but the U would be a really good place to go if you cannot actually get into the mayo. i do know just to be seen at the mayo,it does take some time and effort. the U is just another great option for you where you would be treated well and have teams of docs all working on your problem. this is just how they do things at a teaching hospital.

i myself had to go there when i was found to have a cavernous hemangioma sitting inside my spinal cord that was bleeding. i had one of the tops in the head of neurosurgery with over 30 years of experience working on me,and that was huge for me let me tell ya. you simply need to be seeing a good liver doc who has had ALOT of experience in just treating patients. this type of specialist would have had a much higher chance along the way,in just actually treating someone with your ongoing symptoms vs a small paractice type doc? you know what i mean? experience is the key here. you just really have to find out what your actual dx is. is there ANY other family memebers who you can think of off hand who has had a similar issue or even any liver issues at all? or even kidney? sometimes certain liver disorders are actually casued by some types of kidney diseases. this is my situation with PKD and it also involved the liver too. our youngest son unfortuently ended up with a mutated form of this that actually casued him to go into liver failure at age 12. i do hope you can find a good knowledgable doc to try and figure out just what the underlying cause is of this insanity in you. good luck and please keep us posted. Marcia

Allan, I beleve you have liver-cancer, probably angiosarcoma.
Nearly impossible to detect before you die. Difficult to see on ul/ct/mri , looks often like steatosis. I have the same symtoms, bad metabilism for some years and now severe pain from liver and spleen and i am soon dying. Have been working with chlorinated hydrocarbones like dichlorometane and vinyl-chloride 11 - 16 years ago.

Re: Urgent help needed: Bad metabolism problems, swollen liver, severe sleep deprevat

I'm not sure what is happening to my liver. All I know is that it is swollen possibly because of the psychotropics meds I'm on for Bipolar Disorder. I get more full after eating now than before and I drink water so much like it's going out of style. I have a doctor's appointment on Jan. 12 th at 10:45 AM next Monday. I hope it's just something minor, so we'll see. As for you I hope that your liver is in great condition and that the problem will go away and be healed.

Re: Urgent help needed: Bad metabolism problems, swollen liver, severe sleep deprevat

Hello: Has your doctor suggested an herb by the name of
Milk Thistle? It is noted for having a healing effect on the liver. (You
might try a "google" search of this herb. I take one capsule 3 times a day. My ALT & AST are elevated and also my iron level is 471. I do have liver damage.
This is a very complicated situation.
Try Medicine.net, *****, National Institutes of Health, and other web
sites to learn all you can about your condition. Getting that basic sleep
is very important. May God lead you in this search.

Re: Urgent help needed: Bad metabolism problems, swollen liver, severe sleep deprevat

hey tribbles? just wondering what meds they have you on for your bi polar? the only reason i am asking is some of them can actually cause liver problems and some can actually cause diabetes/and crazy blood sugars to occur too. it all depends upon what meds you are taking. if you could list them i could possibly give you some clues here.
