My Dad has had liver disease for years and was just diagnosed with end stage liver disease. There are several different types of cirrhosis (liver disease) my fathers is alcoholic cirrhosis. If you are jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes is a major sign) fluid retention is abdomen, edema in the legs (this could be caused by various things)... I am not an expert, but have seen my Dad deal with this for years. You need to have blood work done a full liver work up and they will be able to tell by the blood work if you have liver problems. I wish you the best.

Re: how to know if you have liver problems

great advice up there. the two main things you need to know about are how your overall liver functions are(lab work),and getting a good hard "look' at how your liver actually looks. trust me when i say that just only getting your labs done, will only give you half of what could be the whole picture. alot depends upon just what may be wrong and how far along that real damage is as far as when you have passed that 'threshhold" into your labs actually going out of range.

i have a liver and kidney disease that i did not even have a clue i was born with until my youngest went into suprise liver failure one day(i was actually almost 40 years old at this point). insane i know. when my labs were tested on both organs, they were perfect, and still amazingly are this way. BUT,if you took one look at my ultrasounds, you would not possibly even believe that the US and the labs came from the very same person. i have alot of very heavy cystic damage in both liver and kidneys but amazingly the functions are STILL within the norm ranges. my kidneys are also about three times the normal size as well. just freaks me out,let me tell ya.

sooo, getting the labs,ALONG with at least an ultrasound really would tell if there was something to actually be concerned about. what may or may not actually show as far as symptoms or out of range labs is pretty much up to just what IS actually affecting the liver, or the kidneys for that matter. labs are just one step, the 'look' at the organs is the other. if you have concerns, just speak with your primary doc about the two tests i mentioned above. it would give the best possible overall picture(without spending a ton of money as well). good luck and i do hope everything is okay. please keep us posted. Marcia
