Post Liver Enzyme Count

I'm having more tests done in three weeks but I'm alarmed at my latest blood work:
ALT ... 78
ALK ... 96
AST ... 27
BILI INDIRECT ... 0.01
The doctor suggests this: fatty liver, medabolic syndrome, hemocrometosis, or perhaps a recent bout with high blood pressure (for the first time). I need input on what I can do for the next three weeks to help correct this. I'm a 55 year old that doesn't drink, have been married to the same man for 32 years, and have never used abusive drugs.

I forgot to mention that I also was on the Atkins diet for 8 weeks prior to yearly exam. I took ludiomil w/Dilantin for 25 years for seizures and I'm on estraderm patch. I would love to know what some of you with more knowledge than I think. Thanks

I too have been on the atkins diet and although my cholesterol came back great, my liver enzymes came back elevated. Alt 136 and Ast 100.

Hi Lady,

According to the "normal" ranges as indicated on my print out of blood work, your ALK looks good (normals is 25-115). Your AST also isn't bad (normal is 10-37). I don't know about the bili, as mine says it's bili direct and total, no listing for indirect. Your ALT is elevated (normal is 5-37).

Before my diagnosis of NASH, when the docs were ruling stuff out, they had me go off my birth control and advil/tylenol to see if that's what was causing the enzyme increase. My numbers did decrease after I went off it, but were still over double what they should be. So I figure that the birth control probably just aggravated the situation, who knows. So I no longer take birth control (my hepatologist thought that was best until we get the situation "under control"). I also take as little advil as possible, only when I really need it. I was given Vioxx (prescription) to take during my birth control/advil abstinence in case I had a headache. Apparently it's pretty easy on the liver, at least easier than even advil. I take that but will need to get a refill soon.

I was told by my nutritionist not to do Atkins as ketosis is not good for the liver. That was her opinion.
Hope this helps,
Laura

I had always read that ketosis is bad for your kidneys. I know that the foods that are healthiest for your liver are low carb foods. I cannot comment on the Atkins diet since I don't know too much about it except there is alot of fat in that diet and that is not good for the liver. Stick to fresh veggies and grains and nuts and lean meats limiting your red meat content is what I have always read. I know I need to lose weight. This belly is getting to me. I have always been thin and it is making me nuts. It doesn't help that I am perimenopausal either. No matter how much I excercise or watch the weight does not budge..Lisa
