Fatty Change - Liver & Pancreas Disorders Message Board

My Ultrasound diagnosis came back reading like this.

There is increased echogenicity in the liver indicating fatty change. The gallbladder and spleen appear normal. The kidneys are normal in size and echotexture. The pancreas is not well seen due to overlying bowel gas.

The abdomen aorta appears normal
IMPRESSION:
Fatty change in liver. Otherwise unremarkable ultrasound of abdomen.

My question is this. Does this diagnosis mean I have fatty liver, or does it mean that I may be on my way to developing fatty liver? The Ultrasound technician told me that I had a little fat but nothing unusual for a 47 year old man. I know she is not the doctor, but I'm sure she has done thousands of these scans.

Paborn,

I think the only way to find out how bad fatty liver is, is to have a blood test or even a liver biopsy. Did a radiographer or radiologist do your scan? One is a Dr the other is an assistant, but either way I think they know their stuff.

I have been sent to have ultrasounds on my pancreas loads of times, and everytime the radiologist tutts and says there is no point whatsoever doing an ultrasound on the pancreas as they can never see it! I think you should ask for a CT scan as they are far better for showing the pancreas and biliary system.

It was a ultrasonic technician who did my scan. A Doctor interpreted the images and sent a report to my doctor.

The only way a fatty liver can be diagnosed accurately is through a biopsy. Are you willing to take on the risks of a biopsy though? I know I am not but that's just me..Lisa
