I have had pain in the upper right quadrant for a couple of years. My dr originally diagnosed it as a bowel blockage and treated it as so. The pain comes & goes sometimes it doubles me over and sometimes it is manageable.
Two weeks ago I had an ultrasound and it shows an enlarged liver. I have been in constant pain for the last 3 days and I can't get into the specialist for 2 weeks. I had my gallbladder out almost 19 years ago.
Any ideas of something I can do for the pain in the meantime? I am going to be traveling this week and I know it will become uncomfortable. At night it takes me quite a while to get comfortable to sleep, but I wake up pain free. After I get moving the pain returns.
when they did your US was there ANY other findings there within that liver like enlarged or dilated bile ducts or anything else besides "just' the liver being enlarged? generally when they do the abdominal US, they usually check all the main ducts and also how well bloodflow actually is thru the main arterys and the portal vein within that liver too using that doppler tool? was this a full abdominal US or just looking at your liver only? do you actually have a copy of your own report or were you simply 'told' by your doc what some of that report actually stated? trust me here when i say that you really DO always need to make certain you obtin your very own copies of any and all testing reports done on you along the way just so you can read thru them yourself and just have them for your own records. many many docs, espescially specialists for some sick reason, just do NOT always tell any given patient about ALL findings that are even found in the reports. i have my own theories on the whys there, but just make certain to ALWAYS obtain your own copies.
considering that the actual reason for the enlargement and pain is kind of an "unknown' at this point, it would be kind of hard to really tell you just what would be the most effective way to treat this pain. what does that pain feel like to you? when my son was having ALOT of pain from his liver failure which would give him pain kind of centered more in the middle of the upper quads, we simply used ice packs over the area. he said it worked really well for that pain. it may help you too. anything is worth a try here ya know? what have you actually tried so far? has anything you tried actually worked or helped? Marcia
I do have a copy of the report, I have looked it over and I am still in the dark. I do remember the US tech measuring the ducts - but I don't know what size they should be so I don't know if they are normal or not. I have noticed the pain is almost none if I exercise and drink a lot of water.
I have a family member who is a herbalist and he gave me some herbs to use - which I will be starting tomorrow.
if you actually have read thru your own report and it has not mentioned anything about size of certain areas, then you can presume that it was 'unremarkable' meaning that there was nothing seen that was really unusual or abnormal, so thats a good thing for you. but they still need to find out just why this is even occuring.
make certain if you arte going to be trying ANY herbals that your treating doc actually knows for certain just what it is you are taking and approx amounts too. some herbs/suppliments can have some strange types of side effects, just like with many real rx meds we take too. and they can interact with other meds too. just make sure the doc knows. hopefully they will be able to come up with some idea of just why this is even going on here soon. were all of your liver labs well within the normal ranges? marcia
